re: the obvious gain

quartz,
its arthurian not archurian.

please don't confuse my reasonings with the ramblings of eskimos and jiggawatts. ok

or else wheeloffortune might have to do something about it and you cant stop him now.

re: the obvious gain

I want to remind everyone that in "the obvious gain" scenario, the spring cannot push or pull the arm, because it's part of the arm, and its not connected to anything else!!! therefore, the only force we are dealing with is the force needed to move the weight up the frictionless, curved pa...

re: the obvious gain

I think what Arthur is suggesting is that the extension spring or elastic is callibrated so that at each point of the lift up to 12 O'clock, the weight extends it the exact distance to allow the weight never to rise. If the mechanism is ratcheted at this point, then when it reaches the horizontal a...

re: the obvious gain

I like this picture better it is more like my original picture as it shows the weight never falling. http://www.besslerwheel.com/forum/download.php?id=5662 noone will believe this... but, Jim, your torque calculations are irrelevant. the fact remains that 1 kilo falling 1 meter has the force needed ...

re: the obvious gain

I have tried this in simulation....you are wrong! Your fixed point of 45 degrees with the cord/rope attached will be more of a brake than a governor......it has no "give". When the arm is at 10:30, the cord pulls on the spring while at 4:30 the cord is hanging loose...although the weight ...

re: the obvious gain

The drop the swing are all subordinate to the lift and reset. You show nothing of any reset and in this game, without reset you have nothing. Show us how it will work with the reset and then you might see what the rest of us see. AB again, take a look at "arthurs design" to see the full c...

re: the obvious gain

Fix the weight to the arm and the path will end much higher. If you then release the weight it will fall and stretch the spring. this method of stretching the spring is costly. I have clearly shown a much less costly way to stretch the spring. believe it or not it is free. I have been repeating mys...

re: the obvious gain

lets go back to the original concept. the lift. the question here is not so much semantics of words, but rather it is whether the force to lift the weight is greater when the weight follows the outer path http://www.besslerwheel.com/forum/download.php?id=5660 lifting 1 kilo -- 1 vertical meter up th...

re: the obvious gain

to me this is common sense. it is like arguing 2+2.

the spring moves the weight out further, yes,

but it does NOT lift the weight.

re: the obvious gain

sorry I have been away from the computer for a little while. ok. you people are confused. it is sad to see everyone ignore and deny this simple logic. your diagram shows the arm falling from the vertical position. my question was regarding the arm falling from the 70 degree postion, where the weight...

re: the obvious gain

Yes, the weight travels up a frictionless, smooth curve. I am glad you can at least acknowledge this. You think that because the weight follows a constant upward path that it is not also falling. I think this speaks for itself. ----------- Jim let me ask you this. If the arm fell from 70 degrees (w...

re: the obvious gain

Jim there are clearly some flaws in your calculations. first of all I will remind you that the weight travels up a frictionless, smooth curve. there are no sawtooth steps. you have somehow calculated that the weight falls 0.15708 meters. this is clearly false. your picture shows the path of the weig...

re: the obvious gain

I'm not saying you haven't shown where a movement can store potential energy I can pick a rock up off the ground and store potential energy. big whoop this arm movement can store more potential energy than the cost of the original movement. that's over unity. in "arthurs design", the 'fre...

re: the obvious gain

steve,

to start the 'wheel'
edit: (I'm talking about "arthurs design")

lift the arm to the 12:00 position
and give it a good push counter clockwise.

maybe you can't do that with your program.

re: the obvious gain

Jim I'm sorry but given that there is negligent friction for the weight to slide along the beam, there are no sawtooth steps the weight moves frictionlessly along the the curved blue line. from 0-80 degrees the weight stretches the spring, but NEVER falls. the energy stored in the spring is free ene...
