re: energy producing experiments
The pendulum part of a ballistic pendulum has nothing to do with the change in motion between the colliding objects. The pendulum is used to determine the velocity after impact. In the past there was no accurate way to determine the velocity of a high speed object except by the calculations done by ...

re: energy producing experiments
'mishap' A 20 to 1 could easily put an eye out; a 400 to 1 could easily disable the space craft. 80,000 joules is a real fear for people that actually do experiments.

re: energy producing experiments
www.cabrillo.edu/~cfigueroa/4B/4Blabs/sample_formal_report.pdf Note that they state that the energy change is equal to the difference in projectile mass and combined mass. The difference in the mass of the spinning satellite and the projectile in the Dawn mission is about 400 to 1. After the project...

re: energy producing experiments
For this comparison of the three formulas I have been using 1 m/sec for mathematical simplicity. But 1 m/sec is also in the range of what I throw. With the cart wheel I throw as slow as I can so that I can find the tungsten spheres. One sphere goes down into the grass and the other hopefully goes do...

re: energy producing experiments
KE is Leibniz not Newton. Newton opposed the concept of KE. Attributing KE to Newton is a rewrite of history. Newton was mv; Leibniz was (1/2)mv². They were contemporaries but they were not friends. Let’s not hide the Angular Momentum theory behind ‘radians per second’ and ‘moments of inert...

re: energy producing experiments
So if you have one ninth the mass at three times the radius it only has to move three times as fast to conserve angular momentum? Same 3 as energy. The problem is; it does not work; ballistic pendulums conserve linear momentum. To return the motion you need nine units of linear Newtonian motion not ...

re: energy producing experiments
The 9.00 to 1.00 model is operational and the motion is returned after the cylinder is stopped. Even though the Dawn Mission yo-yo despin was much more massive than the 9 to 1; the principle, of a 100% spin return, would remain the same. If the 3 kilogram masses were allowed to rewrap around the s...

re: energy producing experiments
The circumference is a line and the distance traveled around it is equal to the straight line of travel if the tether is cut. That is a direct equality.
It is 9 any way you try to measure it.

re: energy producing experiments
Apparently you did; NASA did the yo-yo despin and then they mislead you about the velocity of the released masses (missiles). Don't you think it strange that they don't just come out and say the velocity was x, when they surly have the ability to measure it. They are so sure of their concept that ex...

re: energy producing experiments
Ballistic pendulums do not conserve angular momentum or energy. Half of this experiment is a ballistic pendulum and the motion is conserved. That eliminates two of your formulas.

re: energy producing experiments
Even with a short tether length of 1.89 r (cylinder r) the 304 grams of spheres can stop a cylinder of 2276 grams . This is 8.487 to 1 (2580 total grams, to 304 g). For a Newtonian velocity of the spheres, when the spheres have all the motion, of 8.487 time the initial velocity. And if energy is con...

re: energy producing experiments
The squares are clearer in the video. This is another 4.5 to 1 mass ratio; with the cylinder having a mass of 1080g. I discover that by using a transparent film for a marker on the monitor you can watch both the rotation and the side of the cylinder at the same time. As you go frame by frame you can...
