re: A practical natural "wheel"...

Steve same as yourself, have not posted details of my current design, though curious if your design comes anywhere near it, the principle uses pressure placed against a central mechanism that drives the wheel, the pressure could be applied by a combination of pulleys cables, springs, as well as usin...

re: Red Herring clues

Its no red herring, There have been posts suggesting that besslers statement bellow is only about the direction the wheel turns, CW or CCW. http://www.besslerwheel.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4254 "It turns to the right and to the left; it spins around in any possible direction, whether laden or ...

re: few ?s in regards to wheel design.

tarsier i would have preferred to build smaller. the only reason i built it larger was due to the CV tripod cups, as they seem a little too large for a 1 meter wheel. Much of the extra cost is due to trying to design a versatile frame and axle, this will not be wasted, as it will be used for my next...

re: few ?s in regards to wheel design.

AB, not sure what you would pay for the same amount of steel in the US, here in OZ i think its a rip off, one joint quoted me almost double the price for the same piece of steel tube only a few days later. To give an example here in OZ i had quotes for 6.5 M 25mm*25mm *3mm rhs ranging from $34 to $5...

re: few ?s in regards to wheel design.

trevor, i've given up in using gravity as the only source to unbalance a wheel, they always at best balance out. still have many designs to test, cant wait to build this to test if the cf system will work. if this fails the next wheel has an unusual axle, bearing roller design that keeps the axle off...

re: few ?s in regards to wheel design.

thanks trevor, had a quick look at your site. i may skip pulleys and scissors and try to incorporate linkages into the design. Still figuring out if i can skip sliding a weight for each arm lever and only use 1 weight that stays out on the overbalanced side by using linkages. trevor, your lever whee...

re: few ?s in regards to wheel design.

thanks for clearing that up jim. Trevor, were you using scissors or pulleys on your lever system, or is there a more efficient system of connecting a lever to a weight with the same range of movement. when using scissors does leverage reduce for each crossover of the scissor arms (storks bill) ? if t...

re: few ?s in regards to wheel design.

thanks jim, though im a little confused. as an example would a 2M long arm in a horizontal position with an axle centered on this arm, having 10 kg on the right side 1m out from the axle, 10 kg on the left side 80 cm out from the axle have more torque than placing 10 kg on the right side, 30 cm out ...

few ?s in regards to wheel design.

have a few ?s relating to a design. is there any difference shifting a pair of weights with about 20cm movement, if these weights are closer to the axle or further out near the rim of the wheel. Would there be an increase in torque if its closer to the rim, or does the opposite weight which would be...

re: could be a catch/latch wheel ?

fletcher
have realized the tongs action is reversed, would need long levers and weights to create a grab action using scissors.
the pic below shows the basic principle
this would be easier to make using gears, have excluded the weighted levers.

re: could be a catch/latch wheel ?

tarsier, you think the same, its what i meant when stating" there are other ways to perform the same task, the scissors would be a little more complicated to build, but much cheaper". though i am a little unsure, as the arms would not be connected as in you pic, each gear would only need a...
