re: Poser for the physicists!

Okay guys, thanks for the input, it has triggered my mind to logically solve this problem. I can chuck out the magnetic theory now! It all has to do with the properties of a gyroscope. Any oscillating body, whether turning or contracting like a tuning fork, will resist rotation at right angles to th...

re: Poser for the physicists!

Yes there I agree because the principle of gyroscopic rotation about an axis is being used but now find me an instance where the center of gravity is altered in any direction.

re: Poser for the physicists!

TLW, Pm is definitely possible if you have the secret principle!

Also, if you were floating freely in space there is nothing you can do with your arms or legs to make yourself turn simply because every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

re: Poser for the physicists!

Yes Trevor, but you have prove it with a hands-on model!

re: Poser for the physicists!

Guys, these are valid questions and I'm sure we could prove this one way or another using a model in conjunction with computer simulation.
What a fascinating way to get the noble prize.

re: Poser for the physicists!

Yes I agree and until someone comes with a stronger logical argument it stands, so I am open minded to that.

re: Poser for the physicists!

Trevor Lyn What Whatford, think about this for a bit; every body, what ever the shape always presents the same mass toward earth.
So it cannot be gravitation that locks a moon.

re: Poser for the physicists!

Trevor, I used to think it was gravity at first but then I realized that every body, what ever the shape, always revolves on its center of gravity so it always presents the same mass towards earth. That is why I just had to choose the magnetic theory. Another reason why I also discounted tidal locki...

Silvertiger I would like to get involved in this fascinating debate but I need to focus on one problem at a time; its about brain overload, if you know the feeling.

re: Poser for the physicists!

Okay thanks charly2, it will take quite a bit of study to evaluate this because I want be clear in my own mind.
As I said I don't believe tidal locking is credible because it's not evident between the earth and sun.

re: Poser for the physicists!

chary 2, I find that hard to accept because the advancing deformation would be nulled by the receding deformation. If that happened then the earth's axial rotation would have long time done the same with the sun's greater gravity and the tides of the earth also being much greater. They use an argume...

re: Poser for the physicists!

Interesting Jim, but if the moons core is in anyway conductive it will always ultimately axially find a position of rest at right angles to the magnetic flux of the earth.
Even if the moon had been rotating originally it would eventually slow down in synchronisation with its orbit.

re: Poser for the physicists!

I feel that the axial locking of the moon to the earth is far more likely to be due to the latter; magnetic inductive repulsion.

re: Poser for the physicists!

That is now a whole nother can of worms; I am specifically talking about the moons axial synchronisation with the earth.

Poser for the physicists!

Poser for the physicists; Is the moon's axial rotation tidally locked or locked by virtue of magnetic inductive repulsion from the earth's magnetic poles.
