re: W2MD... A great way to build absolutely nothing?
Thank you for the comments Fletcher, rlortie, Gregory, Jim, all!! You have all convinced me and if what you all say is true, I'm sure that it won't take me too long to get a handle on most of the particulars... Okay, I will go download it and learn how to use it. But on my own advice, and knowing ho...

re: Erector Set Build...
Greetings all, A couple new pictures. The first is my erector set wheel with the plastic installed as the 'rim'. I purchased a box of fasteners (that you hold papers together with) and they fit into the 5/32" holes nicely. Bessler said it wasn't a regular rim right? So it will need something ad...

re: W2MD... A great way to build absolutely nothing?
Thank you both for your replies. @ tarsier79: You know, you are right about the picture thing... I guess I was trying to say a picture was worth more than (a file I can't look at) no picture. I can see where gravity-speed movements would be pretty hard to see in a photo, no doubt about that... I wil...

W2MD... A great way to build absolutely nothing?
Hey all, Glad to see that the 'drama' has been disposed of. I was seriously considering leaving this forum altogether. Bad apples and all... I don't have said program, it seems to be what everyone uses to 'sim' projects however. Honestly, I don't want to download a program just to see what people ar...

Erector Set Build...
Hi all, I had to rebuild my erector set wheel, it was too narrow and I had a hard time getting my hands (and parts/etc.) in and out of it. This one is about nine inches wide and there is a lot of room between the support (spokes) so I now can get in there quite easily. It also has a simple a-frame s...

re: Springs and things...
Great drawing AB Hammer!!
I agree with you. At first glance I thought they were springs but in context they must be some sort of expanding air bladders as the rest of the build is comprised of bellows...
Thanks again.
Happy building,
PC

re: Springs and things...
@ AB Hammer, True, I did leave (ugh, bad pun there...) those out. And I did in fact see the bow on there as well (in the Wikipedia article, essentially a different type of leaf spring). You are correct, there are a LOT of different types of springs but the commonality is that they ALL store and rele...

re: 'Braess's Paradox' - a rare occassion a mass can bootstr
Thank you Fletcher! I didn't want to hijack your thread so I started a new one about springs. I did not know about this paradox, very interesting!! If you had a weight connected by multiple springs from different points you could use this mechanical advantage to 'force' the weight to go the 'easy' w...

Springs and things...
Bessler used a spring in his wheel... What is a spring? According to Wikipedia: 'A spring is an elastic object used to store mechanical energy.'. So far so good. Storing energy would be very important if you are using a spring to push/pull your 'wheel' (or weights or mechanics or ?) past the keel po...

re: Materials and physical builds (low end research)
A picture of four (mostly identical) setups sharing the same 'axle': The heavy weights on the left side are 2oz and the smaller weights on the right are .75oz. The 2oz weights hang at the end of short arms. The closest 'beam' has the loose pivot on the 'weighted' arm. (I had to put the 'holder' near...

re: Materials and physical builds (low end research)
Taking a break from building to look at balance points for rigid vs. pivoting arms. Heavy (hanging) weight on short arm, light weight tied to the end of the long arm. Balance point is a lot closer to the heavy side to achieve a 'level' beam. It is interesting to note that you can achieve any balance...
