Bessler's betrayal by Czar Peter the Great.......or what might have been!
re: A Motion Machine
Nice theatre, can you do a detailed re-enactment of the fall from the windmill too?
Seriously though, it's an interesting design. And crucially, does the pivoting diminish the velocity of the balls or augment it? Regards,
Frank

re: A Motion Machine
Frank, hello and welcome..,i think page 11 or 12 on this thread will give you an idea of the principle.....to answer your question,if the"drop"of the fulcrum platform (on each up/down)is greater than the track height ,this and the "suddeness"will reduce the momentum,to overcome this i cushioned the "drop"on each side of the platform with light compression springs.....as you can see in photos above i have attached a pendulum to the fulcrum centre of the see-saw platform.....this is giving better results,i'm in the process of trying varying weights and adjustment of the pendulum length......the idea is ,the pendulum gets a jerk from the balls going past the fulcrum and when the pendulum swings past the fulcrum....the balls then get a boost to keep the movement going ,one feeds the other so to speak........Good Luck.

re: A Motion Machine
An update on where i'm at,...the track i had the rolling balls on proved most problematic, with the speed of the travel and the flimsy support structure when i got the mech.going they would fly off/reset etc.,very frustrating when synchronising the pendulum. swing to favour the see-saw movement ...when focused on something and working alone i get tunnel vision and don't see the simple solution .....so the track or tracks, not sure of one or two ball separate design ,i will use PVC tubing which will be easier shaped and supported...possibly with sealed closed ends which might "cushion"the ball or balls at each limit of their travel, alike a bicycle pump when your finger is placed over the valve exit.....

Merry xmas Rasselasss i like your bows i think that they are a way to work with a rolling weight but only on the 3 oclock fall on the lift cycle the weight will go into a internal spin to take up a position closer to the centre and i beleive the compartment will look like a nut a acorn nut thats what i am thinking about at the moment, the bow twangs and this is a nut you will not crack as clues go i think this line of thought is more hopefull especially when everything developes a spin, spin is everything so spin your self a lovely xmas [/list]

re: A Motion Machine
Andyb thanks for your thoughts,i do believe i have this "nut"cracked...If any of you are old enough to remember Walter Brennan's recording of "Life gets tedious, don't it",well thats how i feel, sore back, sprained ankle and a heavy cold virus...anyway i'm including three photos of a mock up of my build...nothing permanently fixed ,pipe tracks not bowed etc.but in the midst of attaching the pipe tracks temporarily with elastic bands to get exact balance to mark for fitting ....i could not believe the "kick"the elastic bands gave the pendulum to keep it swinging ...so i removed the pipe tracks and timed the pendulum swing time ....1 1/2 hours to standstill....and now looking at the pipe tracks i'm wondering should i use fluid as the medium instead of ball bearings....or would the surge double back on itself so to speak and present more problems....so two paces forward and one back.....Good Luck to all for the New Year.

re: A Motion Machine
Tried fluid,failed.....waste of time, too unstable,no control....so,heres where i am at the present,in this rough sketch,i have highlighted x and 2x and it should be noticeable the angle for the ball runs are altered and no curves,as each side of the see-saw grounds, one ball returns to the fulcrum centre, the other to its limit.....the pendulum tower and pendulum swing are critical as are the distances x and 2x,to get everything in synchro .......just to add the ball runs angled against the drop of the see-saw are slowing the movement down, making it easier to achieve continuity....
