Wheel Animation

Post by Furcurequs »

I recently downloaded (again) the free ray tracing program Povray and have been working on some animations to hopefully (and eventually) show the principles involved in some of my more promising designs.

I'm not yet prepared to share those, however, until I know one way or the other whether my actual devices are going to work (sorry), but I thought I might at least show you a little bit of what can be done with the rendering software. ...plus it's helping me to learn how to use the program.

So, I whipped out a spoked wheel with weights around the rim to give a bit of an idea as to how my other animations look. The program renders the output based upon written descriptions in a text file. The wheel, then, is described as a torus of certain dimensions and the spokes are just thin cylinders and the weights spheres.

I ultimately may not end up with a working wheel, but by golly I plan to at least have a pretty animation!

I'll probably be showing some text and equations in the other, also, but this is the current lighting, camera angle and color scheme (all subject to change without notice). Do you think I should cut back on the flesh tones? Is it too sexy for this forum?

Anyway, you can click on the short video attachment if you want, and if you loop it in your video player, the wheel should keep turning.

Oh, and here's the link to the Povray website:

I always make my wheels colourful too. It must be an artistic thing.

If it's not going to turn on it's own , it can at least look good

Wow, Murilo. I think I'm beginning to understand your avalanche drive. Wait.. Well, I'm feeling some sort of drive, at least. I certainly believe that use of color is better than mine.

...lol

Eccentrically1, thanks. I may try to do a simulation of my own stuff, but of course the ray tracer only displays what you tell it, so I'd have to either program in all the equations myself (and possibly get things wrong) or use the output of another simulation program.

leo (getterdone),

Unfortunately my actual builds aren't quite so nice looking or as colorful. They usually have gobs of masking tape all over them. ...and the occasional dust bunny taped to them by accident. ...haha

Oh, I did once leave part of one of my experiments lying around where a friend had access to it. I got the once black welded iron gadget back all painted in the red, green and yellow Rastafarian colors.

..lol

Furcur,
you said: 'Is it too sexy for this forum? '...
... and Ecc mentioned my holy name as above!

Just like some others, he was trying to check if he was in my ignore list... I guess... 8)

About 'colors', thanx I'm fine and sometimes still sharping my nails! 8))

A bit more seriously: do you think that this software is really useful? Don't you find it already confused?

TC!

Dear murilo, I pray I do not commit the sin of taking thy holy name in vain.

Yes, I've seen some of your back and forth with eccentrically1, but I as but a mere mortal know my place, and so I will just leave that issue for you to deal with in your infinite wisdom.

Oh, and I forgot about those gang colors! Please forgive me my transgression! I really didn't mean to muscle in on your holy turf.

...anyway....

I'm finding the Povray program to be very useful for animating the principles I want to show.

I do plan to demonstrate them physically too, but with the ray tracing program I can also display things like force, velocity and momentum vectors and perhaps relative kinetic energies of different components and things like that all at the same time.

I could probably use a 2d plotting/graphing program to do the same, but I prefer the 3d look.

Plus, the nice animations won't have as much duct tape in them.

I've played a little with ray tracing programs in the past and I've done a little bit of computer programming, too, so I don't really find it too confusing.

Be good.
