IP Accessible
Good call on providing the IP addresses Scott. I think that will boost the quality of communications on this board. I wonder how others feel about this new upgrade.

All For It,
It was a useful tool on the old board. Just tell me where & how :-)

re: IP Accessible
Great, as long as ppl dont confuse multiple IP's being akin to multiple login names.
ie, i use one IP from work ;-) and who knows how-many from dial-up from home (ie, Provider assigned (DHCP) addresses.
but all under same username.
ie,
multiple IPs are ok
multiple usernames are not ok.

re: IP Accessible
So how do we find out the IPs?

Hi Jonathan;
Simply look at the top right hand corner of a post and you will see a wee tiny link called "ip". Click on it and lo and behold, you will see the IP address of the source poster. If it is not there, then it is beacause you are not a registered user or not logged in.

OH!I didn't notice it in all the time I've been on, only when you said it was there. I should point out that the second IP is my other computer, and soon there will be a third as I will be posting from elsewhere while I house sit.

re: IP Accessible
Well maybe people should just say things and not hide behind 'guest'.

re: IP Accessible
Hi All,
IP addresses are not private they are public. IP addresses were available on the old board and they are now available for registered users on this board.
I hope that providing this information will make it just a little bit more difficult to carry out the kind of shenanigans we have seen on the board lately.
Best to all and good luck!
Scott

re: IP Accessible
I agree, I have never heard of anyone thinking that IPs are private, it's not like they say where you literally are. Or am I confused/stupid and they do?

re: IP Accessible
I think most people has server asigned IP addresses, which mean everytime you log onto the net the server gives you a differnent one so where's the use of it?
All you need to do is make it so only registered members can post, if they cant be bothered to do that then what they have to say probably isnt worth hearing.

re: IP Accessible
Johnathan,
Having your actual IP posted can cause various problems.
Just to name a few things.
People spoofing headers in email messages as well as possible spoofing of IP address and username on many IRC clients.
It doesn't bother me, for I proxy through a cable connection from comcast and the IP that I proxy through never stays alive longer then a month at which time I must change my proxy.
There were no intentions of hiding anything or causing any so called "shenanigans" as Scott stated.
My intention was to see if the host would enable public IP's which he has (and so) therefore as you stated in various post is what I was suspect of before posting any further info.
Scott did not stay honest and I doubt he will if the answer is disclosed on this board.
I have hosted a BBS for years prior to the Internet and when there was a thread that was obnoxious I would simply delete it.
There was nothing malicious in the thread only the baiting of honesty.

re: IP Accessible
No, I bet you could get the server to do that, but they don't always, as one can see in my case there are only three, and the third started just today because I'm at a different computer. And I don't thin it has anything to do with literal location because I could go to antoher state and as long as I'm on this computer it will say that is the computer I'm on. The IP system is perfect, esp. if soeone does this at the library all the time, but it is pretty good to identify those who consistently use home computers.
Also, I agree, I would like the whole site to be members only, none of this anonimyi stuff, it is confusing.

re: IP Accessible
Johnathan,
It depends if you use a Static or Dynamic IP. Not the computer.
I have three laptops and a desktop in my home going through a router which all share the same IP. Our X-Box also shares the same IP
Now if I sign on using dial-up I get a different IP nearly every time because they do not hold IP's in dial-up.
It does not identify the computer it identifies the IP address and probable proximity of the IP.

re: IP Accessible
I see, so IPs aren't really that useful. BTW, your post got in just before my previous one, that always happens to me, I write too slow.
