Hi Rasselasss!
If we intend to have access for "free" / natural mechanical motion , we must take aa attentively look around us.
If we have a natural model for mechanical continuous motion ,due to gravity fall and inertia, why we need to "invent" an another one?
We are the creature of this miraculous Cosmos ! So, "Who's who ?...who iis teaching , who is learning ?
Really , "How difficult can it be?" ...to "copy " a celestial design of continuous unbalance due to a certain shape of leverage?

The Wheel,old ground,well known, it was supported by two bearings and could lift/lower a "load"and bi-directional,so safe to assume ,fixed to the axle ..in my opinion,like a "drum"in shape with a shallow hub at one side ...this will give more room for a "mech"to be inserted......so now we "look"at "fixed permanent features"to enable this "mech"to enable rotation.....say..in place of a "crank"as in rough sketch "cam shape"...and in "y"slight ovality of the inside circumference of the rim to shift our "mech"back again so to speak.....To add ,...a link to the earliest ref.to crank "use."..."sawmill"near page bottom.......our use could involve "blade and fork"or two opposing rods with "one"journal.

Can we play a "Trick"with a "deep crank"...where "A" a heavy pendulum swings out at 12 o'clock and back to being "Negated"to the shaft centre at 6 o'clock ....."B" a fixed weight to balance the Wheel.........Problems.....how to "make"the pendulum return to axle centre after 6 o'clock. and release at 12 o'clock..by a fixture or some other method.......is "B" needed would it be better as a heavy flywheel effect ......very rough sketch to illustrate...

So,now we'll play this "negate"the weight idea with a shallow crank with counterbalance weights,where "A"is heavier than "B"but of equal distance from the crank axis and each weight passing through the axle centre......factoring in "centrifugal force"...chaotically spinning but with what outcome ?....very,very rough sketch to illustrate...

I have tried many different configurations of this Crank(y) idea but the simplest IMO is the one with least number of moving parts......... So remembering the problems with C/F and negate of the "deep crank" with single pendulum as stated ....we must "constrain" the pendulum to do what we wish bearing in mind we "only."need a small movement from this "heavy pendulum"to cause motion then bring it back at ? o'clock to negate ad infinitum ..........to refresh,..the drum/axle/crank/backplate are in a"fixed"state(turn as one mass) apart from the pendulum.........Many here have a "notion"the numeral 5 is involved in solving Bessler's puzzle,so how about we use a fixed OR swivel in some manner"V"device (roman numeral for 5).......it can be fixed to the backplate......can we manipulate this idea to achieve a solution.........ps..inverted V at 12......V at 6 0'clock .... very rough sketch ...."C" added to show location........Question....Can the "Bessler"mech.be this "simple"and can "YOU"make the "V"mech.do its task....i know i can...

"Oldie's"will remember this,but does it spark an idea(pun intended)....could it be fixed to the face of the drum and axle with suitable timing and spring strengths using levers to act as a switch to "shift"the pendulum at the appropiate time ....c/f in motion but acting "separately" to the mech. doing the "work"....to illustrate only.

I prefer to keep as few moving parts as possible ,i looked at this where the pendulum rod moves a little (fixed V)but a "swivel"allows the "bob"to swing out ....still the problem to restrain/negate the bob weight after 6 o'clock....its not as difficult as it seems ..clue its not a yo-yo.....maybe swivel and sketch will make it easier to see...

....Now,deep crank,balanced wheel,but with a fixed pendulum rod and a "fixed"v"attached to the drum to restrain this swivel "bob"...this time lets look without "negating"the "bob"and consider what the c/f effect would have on this mech.would it keep the "bob"on side passing through the axle so to speak..sketch to illustrate..lets say a good spin to start the motion........To add.....if the fixed"v"was a suitable strength of spring steel and shape ,blade type(the bow twangs)would it assist from 6-9 o'clock or create chaos...
