What they don't show is how the air gets back into the chambers at the bottom of the loop.

Okay, so the air is pumped back in at the bottom via what some call similar to a "Glad hand coupling". The PVC pipe makes a seal which opens a poppet valve at the same time.

Question is, is this achieved by an outside driven compressor or is the unit hermetically sealed with pressure pr- applied to the top of the tank? Being ambient within itself is IMO worthy of exploring!

I change my mind about the valve! It is a Schrader type valve: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schrader_valve. I count five 220 volt compressors feeding this thing!
