You could have done the same thing with the sphere half full of water with the weight floating in it.

Not really as it would have taken energy greater than just enough to get over pivot point friction to submerge the float

It is a shame that a lot of theoretical talent on here is wasted on chasing the impossible . Just think of what could be achieved by concentrating on the possible .
Why should we waste our time on the possible, If it has already been proved to be possible? The only gain here would be to improve what has already been established. Leave that to the learned, they are already doing a good job of escalating technology on proven products!

We are considered cranks, crackpots, who chase the impossible until we prove that it is possible! Once achieved some will retire, others will go on to pursue more so-called impossibles.

TASK: Invent an open relieved port injected gravity fuelled two stroke engine. Design it so that it can be made in various sizes to accommodate power requirements meeting usage demand. Be the first to have environmentalists screaming you are creating motion pollution!

Ralph,

I think that my statement you referred to was written in a somewhat open-ended manner. It can never be objective.

Ultimately, what is possible, and what is impossible ? Where is the line in the sand, and, ultimately, impossible only becomes impossible when investigation proves it to be impossible.

For me, impossible means trying to overcome Height for Width, not in the sense of taking another design approach altogether where that doesn't clearly come into it, rather blatantly ignoring all the warning signposts, historical evidence and carrying on regardless. But in R & D, for the collective to work, there has to be polarized viewpoints for that group to function properly.

BTW I like the task you describe. Sounds promising ;-)

Why submerge the float, I would have just rotated the sphere, but then again I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish.

Chris,
Later today, I am going to present, on my own thread, a simple (wishful thinking) idea that could help you change your mind.

Keep learning till the end.

I don't understand? Is this a device, and if it is: what would it accomplish?

There is, of course, a spring to mass support structure whited out.

This devise redefines the very principles of passive gravity equilibrators, in so much as they are typically immobile, require rigid fixed frame of reference and a solid attachment to ground.

Also, as Tarsier once pointed out when I was learning the subject , the springs would loose their countenance abilities upon inversion of the support structure.

All of the above has been overcome.

In terms of industrial application, NASA are actively seeking the next generation of passive reduced gravity simulators so that the cost base to train their astronauts is reduced. An embodiment of this pending patent is suitable for that task. It will IMHO supersede the ARGOS apparatus currently used.

So it is a combination between ARGOS and Zorb?

The "line in the sand" stuff moved me almost to tears. I can't understand your concept, but the prose is beautiful.

If you think you have an overunity device, think again, there is no such thing. You might just possibly have an unexpectedly efficient device. In which case you will be abducted by MIB and threatened by aliens.

Thanks Nich

In regards to your pendulum device you propose, I am truly hopeful that your onto something .

The key is the perfect balance of the interacting mechanisms. Once you have balance, any motion derived, whether that be swaying or a rotary translation, will become extended as height for width has be negated.

Create equal and opposite forces so that the C of E laws become your friend.

Cool!

So one can free-float inside a 3-sphere by means of a (complex?) spring/mass/lever-construction: How big?

What about interaction:
Is it possible to interact with an object in the center of that sphere (attachement by axle), or does that conflict with the mechanism?
Otherwise, are there 'windows-of-interaction' on the edge of the shell?
