Thanks Jim and Ken
Here's what the "help" index has to say about circle smoothness...
"Controlling the smoothness of arcs, circles, and ellipses
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Issue
Arcs, circles, and ellipses display jagged.
Solution
To change the smoothness of arcs, circles, and ellipses:
From the Tools menu, choose Options.
In the Options dialog box, choose the Display tab.
In the Display Resolution section, enter a new value in the Arc and circle smoothness field, then choose OK. (The initial value is 100. You can enter a value in the range 1-20000.)
The procedure is equivalent to using the VIEWRES command, which sets the resolution for object generation in the current viewport. A higher value produces smoother objects.
Note: The product requires more time to pan and zoom the objects when you increase the value of VIEWRES."
So thanks for the speed ideas.
The min resolution is 100 and that's where I have it now and some test shapes "fly"

There's an interesting account about J.E.E.B. and his wheel in this .pdf file. You have to go to Google and put in the search terms, "clattering bessler" and and a .pdf file will be identified on the first page named "Math In The Cosmos".
Will try to attach the file but I think it is too large for this site...

The axle diameter was 8*100/(12*12)=5.56% the wheel diameter. If scaled down to two feet (like a bicycle wheel), then the axle diameter would be 4/3". I wouldn't call that unusually large, especially since materials don't scale linearly (if I knew in what way to scale it nonlinearly, it would have been less than that).OrffyreusÂ’ wheel was 12 feet in diameter, 14 inches wide, and had a
rather large axle, about 8 inches thick.
...
Suffice it to say that Orffyreus was trained as a clockmaker. It might be suspected that the extraordinarily thick axle held the secret.
This pdf came from the book "Beyond Reason: 8 Great Problems that Reveal the Limits of Science", which I just happen to have. I was disappointed when I read it because not only does he exaggerate the largeness of the axle, but he falsely attributes an Arabian wheel (pg 12 in the pdf) to Edward Somerset, the Marquis of Worcester, in the 1640s.

I sense boredom on the board so here is a picture of one of my serious attempts.....

You rock!!!! but how do you start making such a monster, I shouldn't know where to begin (first need a design though)

Robert,
Your wheel and shop area look similar to my ongoings. I am now working on one about the same size with half the levers and weights.
I see you have an 8" X 8"X 16" cinder block in the background. I assume this is for final fine tuning. I on the other hand have a 120 pound black smith anvil. A little much for a glue weight but when I get mad, I do not consider kicking it.
Does this picture have any resemblance to that other members machine that was building on the same concept. :-)
Well it is now time for me to go cut two more MDF discs and burn another 49 X 97" sheet of cabinet material.
Attached is a partial pic of my shop. note the lathe is setting on furniture dollys of different size. once the wall behind it is completed I will set it in place.

Here is the back side of my house, showing the attached two story shop. The cabinet shop is through the french doors while the metal shop is below accessed through the garage doors that are on a lower level from the front. The second story with the queen Ann window is my computer room and old fashion drafting table work area.
Not shown is a bay window to the right where two radial arm saws are recessed to save floor space. one is for sawing the other for dadoing or shaping.

This is my workshop after a recent new paint job. I hated the old colour. That's me on the front steps waving.

This is me the day before yesterday. Having just taken my afternoon nap, I am ready to press on.

Bill,
Quit complaining about a bad hair day, at least you have hair, thats more than I got. I always see a gleam in the young ladies eyes when they look at me. I ignore the fact that it is the reflection from my bald head.
I love the picture of your shop and hope you do not forget to feed the goldfish. I see now why you do not get many wheels built as the window washing must keep you busy.
Another picture intended on attaching is to big to send> I will try again after I figure out how to downsize the pixel count.

Hey, Ralph...
I saw a completely bald guy the other day who had a interesting saying on his tee shirt. It said, "God only made so many perfect heads...all the rest have hair!"

On 7/6/06, I found, in any overbalanced gravity wheel with rotation rate, ω, axle to CG distance d, and CG dip angle φ, the average vertical velocity of its drive weights is downward and given by:
Vaver = -2(√2)πdωcosφ
Vaver = -2(√2)πdωcosφ

Ralph probably wished he had one of those Betels hair wigs.
I had one and so did my neighbor.
Dark black, and hair down to there!
mom and dad did not like it.
