Ironman 2 double pendulum

Post by Bill_Mothershead »

Just saw the movie, good stuff.

About 2/3 of the way through the movie there was a scene
where the actors were improvising comedy with a desktop
kinetic sculpture. It was about a foot high, sat on a desk,
was shiny chrome, and was a complicated double
(or possible triple?) pendulum that moved/jerked around
in an weird/unpredictable manner. To some in the
audience it may have "suggested" perpetual motion.

The "device" had nothing to do with the plot of the movie
or any kind of character development, etc. Just on
the screen for amusement and decoration.

It looked real, ie. not a one-of-a-kind movie prop.
It is probably for sale somewhere (like ebay, etc.)
Or possibly might have a youtube video.

I tried Google, but no luck on my obvious keywords.

I would like to get a better view of it without spending
$7 to see the whole move again.

So...heads up. Pay attention during that scene.
It might be your only chance to look at it until
the DVD comes out and somebody edits that scene
for youtube.

Pls, take a look with care.
Look when the straight lever reaches to 10h and will reverse... it comes back anti-clock too fast.... really too fast.. :(
Something is not right on this position changing.
Did someone buy this set?
What if mercury is used inside?
Take care.

If it works like the rest of the similar desk top novelty's, like the one I have
the main lever has a very small rare earth magnet in the bottom end. Concealed in the base is a magnetic 'Hall' switch a small coil, transistor and two to four AA batteries.

Mine has ran for up to 2 years 10 months on the same set of batteries. I paid $29.95 for mine at a Pilot Truck Stop gift store.

I agree with Murilo, not the speed but how systematic it stops and reverses at 10:00, to frequent to be considered chaotic.

Sorry about the confusion.

Watch the youtube video that Jim posted.
It is just a few seconds of random movement and
then the video ends.

All I did was convert it to an animated GIF.
It makes an endless loop out of a video that
was NOT meant to be looped.

The ending position does not seamlessly line up
with the starting position. There is an obvious
big jerk where it starts over.

American free enterprise!
Cost to produce and sell: about $39
Profit: about $200
Goal: sell 5000 units
Result: You're now a millionaire! (Until the tax man knocks.)

I bought something which is run by a computer in the base to give, not anomalous motion, but anomalous suspension.
