Using gear without teeth

Is there any way to gear wheels without any teeth?

You can replace meshing gears with pulleys with belts for example, crossed over like an '8' if you want to change direction.

I have used this type of gearing.

The problem I have found is the "CROSSING" of the belt in the "8" form causes too much friction.

The only problem with this setup is slippage , after a couple of rotations the wheels will not be sincronized anymore .
