1 How can I tell if I am using wrong Ball Bearings on steel axle for my
wheel?

2. How to choose the right bearings?

I am using two 20mm OD 6mm ID ball bearings on 5mm diameter steel axle for two 60cm diameter 8/9mm thick MDF board circular wheels (one on either side of axle).

Wheel looking ok, except there is a very low crackling or clicking continuous noise, as the wheel turns, coming from the axle or bearings, it seems.

3. What could be causing this continuous noise?

Try changing out the bearings. Then perhaps try a light oiling of the bearings. I once used a lithium grease after some research into low friction coefficients.

Anyways .. any noise you can hear will be frictions. Bearings are not perfect but they are probably better than bushings which I sometimes use for pivots.

Even Bs' wheels had friction. His first small workshop model barely turned. If a wheel does not work because of friction then it may not be the amount of friction present that is the problem.

"6mm ID ball bearings on 5mm diameter steel axle"

Check if axle is not turning inside the inner bearing race, it axle is not of polished steel it may be what is causing your problem!

Hi raj ,

If your bearings have a nr , normally 6002 RS , it means something .

The 2 at the end of the nr X 5 should give the bearing inside dia . You have a 5 mm shaft so I gues the correct bearing would be a 6001 RS . The RS stand for the type of seal on the bearing . RS is a rubber seal . All the lube the bearing needs for life is inside the bearing and can never be greased because of the seal .

If you want to reduce the friction of the bearing pry off the 2 seals with care not to damage the ball's or the races including the ball cage . Wash the open bearing in auto gas and blow dry . The bearing will not have a long life , even if moisture is guarded against , but you will not find anything with less friction in a hurry . You will have enough time though for a couple of day's and a lot of rotation .

Neat idea but it looks like it cannot work; the outer weights do not seem to offset the inner ones. At best it should just stop.

Hi Raj,

great Animation from PathFinder.

You will have some machanical difficulties,
because the ways of the weights will cross each other.

It is like a simulation of walking, a step function.
It remembers me on my walker construction.

see also:
In earlier days they had a construction like this.

They used it to build their castles, to bring the stone up to the hill.

Unfortunately there is no translation in english.

Found it in our museum
