Bessler was attempting to solve the age old chestnut of ‘true mechanical PM’. He considered gravity his ‘energy source (in today’s parlance)’ to harness and do external Work. We know this from his books and in particular MT (unpublished at his death and in his possession until then). In MT, which is compartmentalised, the first 55 are gravity machines (first 54 contain side comments). Thereafter he explores concepts for wind and water etc. Finally we have the Toy’s Page (MT’s 138 to 141) with a couple of balance studies thereafter.ovyyus wrote:If the humble tool Bessler referred to was a 'simple lever' (as you intuit) then something added to it must result in a 'special lever' that can then harness an energy source within the wheel.Fletcher wrote:That sounds to me like a wheel with some latitude for inexactness, that really did follow the rules of physics. But that ol' humble tool (my intuition says the common garden lever) was doing a job (n.b. nothing anomalous) that most can't comprehend. IMO.
Defining what kind of energy source is to be harnessed is the first step in designing any engine.
Bessler described what powered his falling weights (gravity), but did he describe what powered his 'special levers'?
In MT Bessler annotates the first 54 conceptual drawings and designs. The fact that they were commented on at all is evidence of something, or some intent of significance or importance ! And since no energy source is identified directly in all those first 55 unworkable designs then his associated notes must be of some pure mechanical significance to his solution, imo. As with the Toys Page mechanical actions the energy source has to be inferred !
The following are chronologically ordered from MT .. and can be read in full in the wiki page (and JC’s original MT translation).
1. Enact Connectedness Principle (MT9)
2. Correct Handle and Construction (MT10)
3. Prime Mover Source Not Shown and can’t be Deduced (MT15)
4. Correct Application of the Stork’s Bills (MT38)
5. Something Special behind the Stork's Bills / More to the Stork’s Bill than Shown (MT41)
As I’ve said in previous posts I believe that item 2. Correct Handle and Construction, relates to the simple Lever alluded to in DT. Supplemented by the addition and action of items 4. & 5. To form a special purpose lever !
And the combination of all the mechanical elements, items 1. thru 5., produce a sustained OOB solution to his ‘true mechanical PM’. And if sustained imbalance turned his wheels, and none other energy source is shown in or deduced from the Toys Page, then gravity force must be inferred as the power source. IMO. As hard as that alleged fuel source for such a device is to fathom and swallow for those of us educated to believe otherwise !
