First Moon Landing - 50th Anniversary

Post by Furcurequs »

The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing is in just 10 days. It's hard to believe that it will be 50 years - a half a century(!) - since I watched it live on television as a 6 year old.

Anyway, there have been lots of good recent television and movie documentaries covering the event that contain much more detailed information than we were able to get in real time back in the day. Plus, having possibly matured a little bit since the age of 6 and now even having had some real world engineering experience, the reality of the accomplishment in some ways seems even more impressive to me now than it did back then.

Here you can access a three part, six hour documentary on PBS's American Experience called "Chasing the Moon."
“Chasing the Moon, a film by Robert Stone, reimagines the race to the moon for a new generation, upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort.

In his latest video, Destin of the youtube channel SmarterEveryDay shows the inside of the room where most of the moon rocks are kept.

In the 70s women libbers had a t-shirt that said we put a man on the moon why not all of them?

I read somewhere they expected the dust to be thicker given the age of the moon than it was/is.
