Algodoo

re: Algodoo
Installing on Ubuntu
This is the commands I used to get the product working.
Download the Algodoo for windows. In my case 2.1.0 and place it on your desktop.
Then in a terminal
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install wine
sudo apt install winetricks
wine ./Desktop/Algodoo_2_1_0-Win32.exe
Follow the on screen instructions.
If this had not worked I would have stopped here.
Note. This product follows Newtonian Mechanics using a Lagrangian method.
If you find none Newtonian effects.
Then they could be calculation inaccuracy or bugs.

re: Algodoo
I found it interesting to create a scene with a few simple objects.
Save the scene and then replace the file extension with .zip
The purpose is to extract the phun file that is within the phz file.
After placing it on my desktop I double click and there is the scene.
Now the fun starts as the file is in plain text and can be edited.
Of cause other application can export objects as plain text.
I have found modelling software describe objects in similar ways.
The process is to transfer the basic information from one to the other.
Regards

re: Algodoo
Hi agor95- How does Algodoo compare to WM2? Do you find it to be more user friendly or about the same? I run Linux but have never tried running a Windows program in Wine. Do you open the Wine application before opening the Windows application or does Wine open simultaneously with Algodoo?

Hi gravitationallychallenged
To answer your questions
I have not used WM2 so I am not able to compare it with Algodoo.
I put the instructions to install and run Algodoo on a previous post.
I do this just in case I forget.
In that post you will see in the terminal console type execute wine and pass in the windows .exe file.
I need too study 'The Quest' the hard way.
So Algodoo is easy compared to my approach.
Having a software doing the technical work hides that part from you.
To really understand you need to do the work. Painful but educational.
P.S. I find the need too validate the simulations accuracy using the principle of conservation of energy / momentum.
At the same time creating a device that increases it's momentum quite a lateral endeavor.
All the Best

I agree with you that only by performing the work of experimentation will we be able to completely understand how to build a mechanism that increases the momentum of the wheel as it turns. I don't think any simulator can be expected to discover the configuration but a simulator could be useful for demonstrating the movement to other people.

re: Algodoo
I have often asked myself the question if sims are, or are not capable of giving us a runner.
If the programme only calculates active forces for each given time frame, then i would have thought it would be possible.
If there is a safe guard, to protect the sim from doing what is considered impossible, by predicting the evolution of acting forces and refusing PM, then obviously it wouldn't be possible.
My thoughts are the first option, but i can't be 100% sure.

Hi All
Both your post are well consider and we all dance around on the blade of possible to impossible. Nothing like cutting edge research.
I believe the community here accept demonstration by simulators and animation clips have been an improvement to the forums dialogue.

Hi GC, I trust you are well.gravitationallychallenged wrote:I agree with you that only by performing the work of experimentation will we be able to completely understand how to build a mechanism that increases the momentum of the wheel as it turns. I recently built one of my configurations in Algodoo and it did not run. Algodoo can not simulate magnets though so I figured out a type of substitute for their effect.
I would not let a simulator deter me from completing a build but it does help to get you thinking about alternative configurations.
Persevere to succeed.
re: Algodoo
2 years ago I started building wheel because of the simulation error.
After that time, I do not believe the simulation.
But I use it just partial check for parts moving pattern.
And I can apply heavy weights to some parts to check balance or something.
In my opinion Algodoo is good and easy S/W.
But please do not trust 100%.

I don't say I can do it, I do it until I can.
re: Algodoo
good advice
A design needs to be checked using different methods.
It would be great if they produce results that match.
