I was surprised at the difference the spring made in this case.

The spring works somewhat like a capacitor: it can only act on a potential-difference and is able to filter the high frequency.

Well it should be possible to use php programing language to create a statistics page.
That could show friends or foe counts for each actively member.

Say 'last logged in date' in the last 90 days.

I think the search.php is restricted to the database table holding the posts.

There is a limiter so it can not be miss used.

As you are accessing the underlying database via a search program.
We are confined to that one database table.

The database table users hold the 'Foe' data. So the search will not see that data.

Also the stats page needs to process the users data to turn it around.

The user id of the person's record; who marked a person 'Foe' can be dropped.
The user id on the 'Foe' is a place holder to hold the count.

So this page would be created/compiled once a day.
