Thank you Walter. I'll explain where I went wrong.

LOL - Not yet. :-)

What I am trying to achieve is to mount a rider on the pendulum who is flung to the left as the pendulum accelerates down and to the right as the pendulum decelerates up.

This shifts the net mass of rider and pendulum to its left as the pendulum accelerates down and to its right as the pendulum decelerates up.

This results in a net mass shift to the right that generates a small clockwise torque which carries the pendulum over the top.

For people who find the concept of 3rd derivative of position with respect to time (jerk), difficult, here is an explanation in non-mathematical language:

Well, I'm wandering here and wandering there hoping to set my eyes on the wonderful soul who can produce it. I'm kingdom building. I need that to include in my book. I'm willing to pay a fair price.

Not a king's ransom, yet fair. I'm also willing to pay a finder's fee.

That would make a good animation.

No doubt if the experiment is a success someone like James Burke will make an animation people can understand.

Even if the initial rig fails to get over the top it could provide evidence that the principle is sound by showing the the pendulum rises higher with the rider free than with the rider locked.

The apparatus can then be progressively defined by using the hill climbing technique.

For a theoretician this has the interesting aspect that in involves the 4th derivative.

1st derivative - travel in straight line - translation energy
2nd derivative - acceleration in a straight line
also constant angular velocity in a circle (acc. towards the centre).
3rd derivative - change in acceleration towards the centre
as in the case of the 360° pendulum.
4th derivative - change in THAT acceleration as takes place to a pivoted passenger on
a pendulum who flung backward in the acceleration phase and forward
in the deceleration phase.

There's a name for the 4th derivative. It's called jounce or snap. I prefer snap which conjures up an image of a hungry crocodile whereas jounce conjures up nothing.

There is reason for liking the idea of a fourth derivative. It makes it seem one has got outside the three dimensions of space and into the 4th dimension of time. It's as though one has jumped forward from one minute to midnight to one minute past.

A pendulum it is not only flung forward in the deceleration phase, it is also accelerate upwards against gravity.
It is flying in a bow upwards.
Therefore the force on the pivot point is enlarged.
A hard stop, maybe a jerk, will creates enormous forces on the pivot point.
The forces are splitted in an up and a down force, the down force will drive the wheel,
and gravity has to decelerate and accelerate the mass again.
So gravity has to work twice.
Best regards

Georg
