Sorry, I thought you meant directly apart. So you are correct, you have caused an unbalance. The unbalance is 2 weights x radius. In this case, through rotation we get energy relative to the drop of those weights: 2 weights x radius (through 90 degrees rotation where we achieve maximum speed) At this point we need to separate the bottom weights or raise the top weights to get balance. Either one will be 2 weights x radius against gravity.

This is a 0 sum game.

Someone may have to correct me here...The additional negative is the leading weight has to be accelerated into rotation, gaining twiice the KE as you lose with the other weight. This means it costs energy to move the weights in a moving system. This might lead to the possibility that with the leading weight at 1/2r but 2x weight (or 4x at 1/4r or more) There might be an opportunity to use the KE differential to help us lift the weight...Again, will need a fact check on this one.

Follow up, yes! yes! A torsion spring connected between the two rollers. One roller would roll forward causing the wheel to turn, then the other one would roll down, winding the spring up, alternating back and forth, just as Bessler described. What if that was the way it was done? Some thing so simple, yet so difficult to imagine---------------------------------Sam

There will be no lifting of weights , it is a matter of transfering energy between the weights , just like in a Newton cradle but without the impact . Since
both weights is in rotation around the axle they both have the same amount of KE , we want the transfere to happen at 12 and 6 . To have the weights at 3 opened we need to start at 6 , slow the trailing weight from within the wheel and the leading weight will eccelerate proportionaly . The weights will never move as described in the first post to 12 and 6 , I just wanted to show where the unbalance come from beacause you siad there will be no unbalance in that senario , just enough as to unballance the system . JB himself said not to be greedy . While the weights is in transit they will have no impact on the wheel , only one set of weights will do work only when completed the energy shift . At 12 catch the leading weight , ( this set of weights would be seperated comming up from 3 ) so they will be all closed as soon as the trailing weight reaches 12 and then you have from 12 to 6 to inject overbalance into the wheel .

Hi Daan.

if you unbalance the wheel, it will not turn to 180 where the weights will be balanced. If you slow the trailing weight, the accelerating weight will never reach 12:00, because it is being lifted. Just because they are balanced when they are at 3 or 9, they will not be balanced at any other time...hence the lift.

Perhaps you could draw a small set of simple drawings?

I have a virus at the moment. Hopefully not covid. I had lasting effects from it last time. My little man is progressing well, his personality is coming to the fore. He is noisy, hard headed, persistent, defiant and cheeky. He loves the outdoors, playing ball and tormenting the dogs. I still can't believe how much time he takes up. I love every minute of it though.

I hope you don't have COVID Tarsier79. I never got to know my kids. Well actually I know who a few of them are but they are celebrities. I was underage for at least 5 of the kids that are celebrities. Man I must have like 20+ illegitimate or unattended kids that I have had no contact with. I don't know how to contact them. The only way some of my kids have to know me from is cassette tapes that I left for them as gifts, sometimes including songs that I invented for them, as some of the celebrities are singers. The reason that many became celebrities is because I requested they try somethings in my cassette recordings. The mothers never bothered to contact me. I could list them but I don't want to embarrass myself on the forum. Maybe I could tell you more about it in an email.
