I got some good news & bad news, Sam. Just when I'm getting an idea of what you're saying & getting an idea of how to get this mechanical pencil to draw pictures, it breaks!

Now when I press the button, nothing happens. No new lead! And it was advertised, "guaranteed for life!" I'm thinking about suing them for false advertising.

I'm beginning to think there is some relevance to this pencil as you have mentioned it numerous times.

I'm always trying to read between the cryptic lines.

Hi Waltcy,
Just got home. It's guaranteed for the life of the pen. When the pen dies so does the guarantee. maybe you can fix it--------------Sam

The springs won't work,
I'm thinking it has to be the toggle. All of the forces have to revers for every 1/2 turn of the wheel. The toggle is the only thing I know of that can do that. The toggle being one half of one stage of a SB.

I want to try using the toggle to move the rollers. They should be compatible. The toggle only moves a very short distance, which might be OK, because the roller only has to move a little way to cause the wheel to turn.

Note: A drum and roller in the center won't work because the forces are radial. With them out on a radius the forces are now on a tangent. Any way that's the big difference------------------Sam

Hi Sam, could you show us a photo of your montages? Thanks
Not everything I present is functional, but a surprise can't be completely ruled out.Greetings.

thx4, Hi!
I don't know how. My grandson has promised to come see me. I'm hoping he can help. All I have, is two drums and two rollers.
If I could find a way to roll them forward, I think the wheel would turn----------------Sam

Bell-Cranks,
I found a way, a different way, to drive the rollers with a bell crank. Have to slap some thing together, to see if it will work------------------------Sam

Sam what ever your cause for first motion is , (imagine Primum Mobile (Latin: "first movable") ) , whatever thing that has to move first to move other things , has to be reset again.
Its all relative.

Yes, johannesbender, I think you are exactly right. I might have stumbled onto some thing. I was trying to drive the bell-cranks with weighted arms, only to have the normal problems always associated with them.
There may be a way to use a toggle spring, that would "reset" / drive the rollers as the wheel turns, then they, (the rollers), would stretch out the spring. Sort of alternating back and forth----Sam

I would say no because . .. .. .
I thought it was a good question, Jubat. If the rock could grow & it's creator sat idle, then the roles might reverse.
  • Invariant time prohibits that.
always a glich. What a . . .

. . .oh look, a butterfly!

I think the crux of it is time. A fast powerful force might spin a long time as a little tortuga passes by to notice it while on the way to see new, different things.
  • PM is a function of ∆t

Follow up,
Completed all of the linkages for the toggle springs, to drive the rollers. Normally, the toggle spring will roll the rollers backwards as well as forward. To prevent the back motion / torque, it occurred to me to introduce some "Lost Motion",
to prevent any back force, during this time, or at least minimize it.

Not sure if it will work---------------Sam
