Stewart, why is your German text different than mine? In my AP, it says "Korben" and "aus".

I believe that the screws in the axle directly altered the internal structure of the wheel, instead of merely being a common brake.

John is working on producing a book of 'Gründlicher Bericht' with English translation. I think he has nearly finished it. I'm sure he'll let us all know as soon as it is ready. 'Gründlicher Bericht' (thorough report) (1715) is a report on the Merseburg wheel and includes a copperplate engraving of the wheel exterior. Here is a link to the image from it on this website:

It seems highly unlikely that the pivots/cranks were used for anything other than supporting the wheel in the bearings and for attaching the pendulums for speed regulation. Been toying with my wheel, while waiting for the stiffer springs, and thought I'd share more about what it sounds like, etc.
Have eight out of twelve weights hooked up to move.
Here's what happens....first two fall almost simultaneously, then three to seven fall closer together and eight slams the hardest in its fall. The first two, and eight behave the way they do because they are at the ends and are not connected on both sides. After number eight falls, nine and ten also fall just from momentum. They are not connected to anything
So: WHAM.......BAM......BAM.....BAM....BAM...BAM..BANG....BAM.....BAM.
When what springs there are were all untensioned, the first weight fell, and no more. The tighter they were, the more weights fell and faster.

Robert... The excitement leading up to your build is increasing as your progress reports continue! It seems to be rubbing off on the board! From what your describing, (and I'm not expecting you to reveal your design! lol!), this is what I am imagining!
The weights are connected together by springs and as one falls, it creates a pull on the spring which then stretches the spring, initiating a pull on the next weight in line, which builds up a slingshot effect in turn ramming the first weight and again that second weight is connected to a third weight which is accelerated by the second weight, in turn slamming against the second and first weight, and so on down the line, creating an excess of Kinetic energy which I am guessing, is where your tapping into to get the wheel to turn? (An anvil receives many blows!) If the "chain" of weights were strung around the wheel, say from the 10 to 2 positions, the resulting, "over the hill" effect would be what causes the initial stretch & slingshot effect as the wheel is turning? Just my opinion anyway!

The imagineering you've done, I think has been tried before with no success.
I think the regulating bolt we're talking about now here was just something not really necessary to the wheel's operation. It was put there by JEEB to "rub it in". Like, not only can I make a wheel turn by itself and do work, I can regulate and control the power, whereas, the rest of you can't even make a wheel in the first place.

JEEB tackles everybody, then in getting up, puts his hand on the back of your helmet and pushes himself up from it.

Put them all on.
I'm 97% there.
The springs are still not quite stiff enough, but work slightly better than the screen door sized ones they replaced. These too, when they are too loose, one weight falls, but when tightened it goes one weight further than previously described.
Will try stretching these some more. I'm concerned that too far will give them a permanent set though.
I know I will have to order some more with stiffer numbers to zero in.
