Well, it's obvious to me that a lot of the problems of this tired world of ours revolve around the social, religious, and economic differences between nations and between the classes in each nation. Well, I was sick as a dog last week and not able to engage in my usual internet activities. However, I'm sure that everybody here caught that news story about how the current president of Iran announced that his country now has 164 centrifuges and has begun producing small quantities of enriched uranium. That's the metal with a concentration of about 3% to 5% U235 which is the minimum needed to make a conventional nuclear power plant operate (uranium out of the ground is only about 0.7% U235 naturally). The only problem is that Iran does not have a working nuclear power plant!

I'm sure that this news took everybody over at the White House by surprise. The president of Iran claims that by the end of this year, they will have 6,000 centrifuges in operation and plan to eventually up that number to about 54,000 for the industrialized production of enriched uranium "fuel".

Well, with 6,000 centrifuges working 24/7, it is possible to enrich enough bomb grade uranium (with a U235 concentration of 80% minimum) to make a nuclear weapon every three months. With 54,000 centrifuges, it's possible to produce about two nuclear weapons per week!

The Iranians also announced that they have just perfected a new "intermediate" range missile that is capable of delivering warheads to multiple targets and is coated with a material that makes it invisible to radar! This missile could deliver a nuclear warhead to targets in western India, Egypt, and even eastern Europe. But, of course, the West has been assured that Iran will only be enriching the 120 tons of uranium gas it now has into fuel for its nuclear power plants.

Well, the UN has given Iran until this April 28th to cease all uranium enrichment. Most likely, that will not happen and, possibly, sometime this year, they will be announcing the first successful underground test of a nuclear weapon.

I suspect that the decision has already been made at the White House to launch a massive aerial attack on hundreds of suspected nuclear facilities inside of Iran using nuclear munitions and that, most likely, we are now only months away from such an attack.

This will be a most interesting year, indeed...

Having lost the cold war as a means to instill fear in us, those in power have replaced the threat with Islam. They used to protect us from the 'commies' and now they have provided us with a new threat.
Are we truly going to fall for the same WMD farce they pulled on us with Iraq ?
Bush and Blair will send thousands more of our sons and daughters to their deaths and then turn around and say "Ooops! No WMD but we have freed these people from an oppressive regime. Here are some Western companies bidding for the contracts to rebuild their country we just destroyed. Because we care we will also help them install a US friendly government" - again.
They will be able to do it because now they have suggested that the uranium is intended for weapons the fear is there. What if they are not lying this time - can the average Joe take that risk ?
If the Bush administration knew Iran had atomic weapons and they believed their own propaganda would they not already have carpet bombed the place ?
Is it all about controlling the oil prices/economy to control the people and erode their rights and freedoms with reforms like the patriot act ? What can be done about it ? Why is it widely believed that Bush cheated his way into the Whitehouse and yet he is still there ? Is there no structure for investigating this ?

When it comes to 9/11 and just watching the available footage there are so many questions. Why can you see explosions occur just before the planes strike the towers ? What were the explosions that were reported so long after the impact just before and during the collapse and can be heard on the footage ? Why can you see flashes inside the towers many stories below the collapsing level ?
How did such relatively small fires (there are pictures of people standing at the edge of the gash, it can not have been that hot) melt the steel infrastructure. You can see most of the fuel burn up on impact outside of the buildings in massive fireballs.
Why did the commission report they did not know why building 7 collapsed hours later, when Silverstein is on film saying the fire department pulled it ? How did they manage to rig the building for demolition in such a short time - apparently the planning and setting of charges takes days not hours ?
Why did Bush on being advised of an apparent attack on America not return to attend to it rather than read to children ? Even if it was at first considered an horrendous accident surely it demanded his attention over a photo opportunity ?
Why did NORAD not intercept the planes ? Why is the wreckage at the Pentagon not consistent with the alledged size of aircraft that supposedly struck it ? There is very little wreckage and the one picture of an engine is far too small.
Why are there so many goddamn questions ? Why have they not been answered ?

Hi dig and welcome to the forum. Great post. IMHO The reason there are so many questions is because our government has become so opaque and corrupt at this point in our imperial saga. I'm not saying there was a conspiracy. I just don't know. What I do know is that our "authorities" have created a pervasive atmosphere of suspicion through their various actions and inactions. So by default we are all left to wonder.

My feeling is that the 9/11 Commission is going to go down in history as an equivalent to the Warren Commission. A coverup? Maybe. More fodder for the imaginations of Imperial subjects like us? Definitely.

Newswise — Thirteen of the nation’s most prominent physicists have written a letter to President Bush, calling U.S. plans to reportedly use nuclear weapons against Iran “gravely irresponsible” and warning that such action would have “disastrous consequences for the security of the United States and the world.”

The physicists include five Nobel laureates, a recipient of the National Medal of Science and three past presidents of the American Physical Society, the nationÂ’s preeminent professional society for physicists.

Their letter was prompted by recent articles in the Washington Post, New Yorker and other publications that one of the options being considered by Pentagon planners and the White House in a military confrontation with Iran includes the use of nuclear bunker busters against underground facilities. These reports were neither confirmed nor denied by White House and Pentagon officials.

The letter was initiated by Jorge Hirsch, a professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego, who last fall put together a petition signed by more than 1,800 physicists that repudiated new U.S. nuclear weapons policies that include preemptive use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear adversaries ( http://physics.ucsd.edu/petition/ ). Hirsch has also published 15 articles in recent months ( http://antiwar.com/hirsch/ ) documenting the dangers associated with a potential U.S. nuclear strike on Iran.

"Physicists know best about the devastating effects of the weapons they created, and these eminent physicists speak for thousands of our colleagues.”

“The fact that the existence of this plan has not been denied by the Administration should be a cause of great alarm, even if it is only one of several plans being considered,” he adds. “The public should join these eminent scientists in demanding that the Administration publicly renounces such a misbegotten option against a non-nuclear country like Iran.”

The letter, which is available at http://physics.ucsd.edu/petition/physicistsletter.html , points out that “nuclear weapons are unique among weapons of mass destruction,” and that nuclear weapons in today's arsenals have a total power of more than 200,000 times the explosive energy of the bomb that leveled Hiroshima, which caused the deaths of more than 100,000 people.

It notes that there are no sharp lines between small and large nuclear weapons, nor between nuclear weapons targeting facilities and those targeting armies or cities, and that the use by the United States of nuclear weapons after 60 years of non-use will make the use of nuclear weapons by others more likely.

“Once the U.S. uses a nuclear weapon again, it will heighten the probability that others will too,” the physicists write. “In a world with many more nuclear nations and no longer a ‘taboo’ against the use of nuclear weapons, there will be a greatly enhanced risk that regional conflicts could expand into global nuclear war, with the potential to destroy our civilization.”

The letter echoes the main objection of last fallÂ’s physicistsÂ’ petition, stressing that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty will be irreversibly damaged by the use or even the threat of use of nuclear weapons by a nuclear nation against a non-nuclear one, with disastrous consequences for the security of the United States and the world.

“It is gravely irresponsible for the U.S. as the greatest superpower to consider courses of action that could eventually lead to the widespread destruction of life on the planet. We urge the administration to announce publicly that it is taking the nuclear option off the table in the case of all non-nuclear adversaries, present or future, and we urge the American people to make their voices heard on this matter.”

I do not know much of political, economy, etc. but intuitively I think that an attack to the iran (unfortunately unavoidable) can be the beginning for a fight between civilization. I hope that the humanity does not solve the problem of the energy ...simply disappearing from the earth.

I'm not envisioning a complete elimination of all cultural differences between peoples. I, too, enjoy an occasional dinner at a foreign restaurant and the different styles of dress and architecture found around the world.

The "homogenization" I think is coming will be more along the lines of language, education, economics, and politics. As each of the now seperate 200 or so nations becomes a member state in a global nation, their languages, civil and criminal laws, currencies, etc. can be standardized. Then, people will be able to freely travel about from one state to another on the Earth and be able to successfully interact with each other. Intermixing of the human gene pool will eventually result in a sort of composite globalized human being...a single race which will then go on to develop a standardized moral and ethical code founded on the principles taken from all of Earth's religions. I truly believe that only such a transformation can keep the human race from self-extinquishing itself in the centuries to come.

But, don't worry. This metamorphosis will not take place over night. No, it will require centuries during which people will have plenty of time to adjust to the process and, more importantly, to decide if they want to let it continue. I think that if the global metamorphosis is logical and does not stifle human creativity and ambition, then it will be embraced by most of the citizens of planet Earth. It is, however, absolutely mandatory that any system proposed not be one in which a small political or economic class can use it to their advantage to suppress or exploit the masses. This must be a system that empowers and ennobles all of humanity.



Well, the war of words from Iran just keeps heating up. President Mamoud Amadinejhaf (pronounced "AH - MA - DEE - NAH - JAF") said that his army is the best in the world and would "cut off the hand" of anybody that tried to invade Iran! He was referring to another US organized coalition of military forces, of course.

Yesterday, they had a military parade day over in Tehran and showed off their latest weapons...including that new intermediate range missile that has the Western powers so shaken up.

Personally, most of what I saw looked like obsolete Soviet era equipment that will only provide nice target practice for the military forces of the West when military action becomes necessary later this year. However, that new missile of his is a serious threat. With a range of about 1250 miles and radar invisibility, it could easily strike targets in Israel (the US's number one ally in the region) and US air and naval bases in the region. Equipped with nuclear warheads, even crude ones, it could cause massive casualties and forever alter the geopolitics of the region.

However, I'm not sanguine about the use of nuclear munitions to stop them from developing nuclear weapons. Yes, it will probably work, short term, but, I suspect that the environmental and health effects of such weaponry have not been fully considered by our war planners. I read about a test of an ultra-low yield bunker buster type missile and something quite unexpected happened after it hit its target and buried itself about 80 feet or so into the ground before detonating.

Yes, the blast itself was completely contained underground, but then a strange purple gas began issuing from the entry tunnel made by the missile's hardened nose cone. That gas proved to be highly radioactive Iodine-141. That's the same gas that came out of that Soviet graphite reactor that caught fire over in Chenobyl. The containation from that gas resulted in many of the citizens of the surrounding area eventually developing thyroid cancer and having to have their thyroids surgically removed! A full assessment of the genetic consequences of that disaster has yet to be made. What might the effects of dozens of plumes of Iodine-141 being released near residential areas in Iran be? No one knows for sure at this point. Like Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we'll only know the consequences after the fact of an attack.

I'm really hoping that the Iranians will back down and begin cooperating with the United Nations. However, I suspect that that will not be happening. I think that the leaders of Iran actually want war with the West. Perhaps they perceive it as a way to nationalistically unite the various factions of their population and somehow strengthen their unelected theocracy.

Or, perhaps they believe that it will be some sort of Islamic version of the "Battle of Armmagedon" that will then usher in the moslem equivalent of a Messiah. It's hard to know exactly what kind of bizarre logic is in the minds of the mullahs that now rule Iran...

Unfortunately, such a statement displays evidence of egocentric pomposity. Those who were alive during WWI and WWII would beg to differ, and those who will be alive during the 'abomination of desolation' will also disagree. Hyper-sprituality is so often accompanied by the self-aggrandizing: 'Jesus must be coming back in MY lifetime'; - yet in honor and respect to the approximately 50 generations that have lived and died since the time of Christ, shouldn't we humbly defer the 'end times' to God's timetable and not our own?
