Actually, they are not making the substance invisible...only transparent. The ordinary liquid crystal displays in wristwatches and other gadgets already do that.

However, I can envision a process that would allow us to immediately render a object not only transparent, but actually completely invisible. To do this, the object would, after becoming invisible, have to have a density equal to that of the surrounding atmosphere. The process would involve the manipulation of the electrical forces inside of an atom in such a way as to alter the electronic structure of the atom and make it incapable of interacting with photons of visible light.
