The evolution of math

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter
girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents
from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel
and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her
discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she
hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction
to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

2. Teaching Math In 1960
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of
$20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class
participation after answering the question: How did the birds and
squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong
answers.)

6. Teaching Math In 2006

Ponder these ones boy's. Scary but true.

1. A man buys a bat & ball for his boy for $1.10. The bat cost a dollar more than the ball. How much was the ball ?

2. A pond has a lily in it. Every day it doubles in size. After 48 days it covers the entire surface of the pond. How many days did it take to cover just half the pond ?

3. 5 machines turn out 5 widgets in 5 minutes. How long will it take for 100 machines to turn out 100 widgets ?

Sometimes the understanding of language can screw someone up, not the understanding of Math. In Fletchers 2nd example someone might ponder, does it mean the original size keep getting added to linearly? In otherwords, 2 +2+2+2+2 instead of 2, 4, 8, 16.

In Ralphs example of, once upon a time in a land far far away, makes more sense if it was said, once upon a land in a time far far away. For instance, can you prove that time is tangible enough that something can be placed upon it?

using Bessler's method

This is a strictly mathematical viewpoint it goes like this
What Makes 100%
What does it mean to give MORE than 100% Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100% We have all
been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%. How about achieving 103% What makes up 100% in life
Here's a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these
questions

If
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

is represented as
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26.

Then

H-A-R-D-W-O-R-K
8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98%



and


K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E
11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%

But

A-T-T-I -T-U-D-E
1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%

And

B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T
2+21+12+12+19+8+9+20 = 103%

AND look how far ass kissing will take you.

A-S-S-K-I-S-S-I-N-G
1+19+19+11+9+19+19+9+14+7 = 118%

So one can conclude with mathematical certainty that While Hard work
and Knowledge will get you close and Attitude will get you there it's

theBullshit and Ass kissing that will put you over the top
