While speaking to a woman the other day that had never heard of Ron Paul, she stated "My goodness, he is amazing. He is the best kept secret of this presidential campaign." She could not believe there was a contender who represented everything she wanted in a presidential candidate and more. (For those of you who have not yet heard, Ron Paul is running for President.) She talked about wanting to end the war in Iraq. Ron Paul has promised to do that immediately and not leave a soldier behind. She talked about wanting a more secure border. Ron Paul has stated that he wants very strong borders and he was appalled that our government had taken border guards off of our borders to send them to Iraq. She mentioned she is treading water financially and never seems to get ahead. Ron Paul has a solution for that too: end the fiat money system so Congress cannot create monetary inflation. Well, what about privacy she asked? She felt we have moved into an age of Big Brother. Ron Paul wants to protect our privacy by sticking to a strict Constitutionalist policy. He wants to end the Patriot Act that allows the government to enter your home without a warrant and without notifying you so you know they were there. Dr. Paul wants to end the destruction of habeas corpus, the only doctrine we have that lets you see a lawyer if you land in jail. Without it, all other rights are meaningless. Dr. Paul has voted against every attempt to regulate and control the Internet. He believes that the Constitution does not give Congress a right to decide who may or may not marry, or what drugs a physician may or may not prescribe. Ron Paul believes in limited Federal government and limited taxes: he even wants to end the Income tax. (Can you imagine taking home your whole paycheck?)
The conversation continued. She wanted to know why she should vote for a person who has no chance. The obvious answer was because Ron Paul offered her everything she wanted. The second not so obvious answer was that he is actually doing much better than anyone knows because the press hides all of his successes. What most people do not know, because the mainstream press is doing its best to manipulate support away from Dr. Paul, is that he won the first debate, he came in second in the second debate, and he came in first in the third debate. In the most recent straw polls Dr. Paul placed second in the Georgetown SC straw poll, he placed second in the Cob County straw poll and he won the Coalition for New Hampshire Taxpayers straw poll at their annual picnic. As of this writing Ron Paul has placed number one in the PajamasMedia straw poll with 70.8% of the votes! Yet, over and over we are subjected to articles that say he has no chance. (This is an oft-used tactic to sway voters away from a candidate because people do not like to "waste" a vote. As if voting for what you want is a waste.)
As an Ozzi (with an accent) I don’t know much about your politics, but I do know it affect us here downunder. In the last decade we seem to have become your last state.
Ron Paul’s policies sound O.K. however are the American people ready for such a down turn to family life and logical justice. We all have this feeling that we can run the country better and Ron Paul’s idea seem to be to give more power to the people. Great Idea if it is done over a certain time period. The current government will push the “War on terror to its max. and so gain absolute power by introducing any policy to (so called) look after our safety, but you know that.
What I would like to see is over a period of time; close all shops (not run by family members) on Saturday and Sunday.(all essential service not affected, but paid overtime) this would give family quality time. (still have 38-40 hour p/w)
Small print on tv adds to be at least the same size as the largest font used on the add.
All salaries to be within minimum wages (as stand) and 12x the minimum wage, this would mean a brain drain in the short term.
Most Australians don’t dislike Americans, but they do dislike their government.
It often makes me think of the Roman Empire and others alike, JUST BEFORE THEIR FALL, and I think the USA will join them within 30 years if things don’t change
Evgwheel: Force shops to close on Saturday and Sunday? Force TV advertising font size conformity? Force more family time = quality family time? Where do these views originate, I wonder?
As Ron Paul said (not an exact quote), "If you're going to force people to keep good habits then you'll force slightly overweight people to diet - where does it end."
I think quite a lot of Aussies would like to see Ron Paul elected as their president too - just a pity our votes don't count :P
I would like to see Sundays off for everyone, but it just doesn't work. It would be a huge blow to the economy.
Limiting a person's wages to 12x the minimum wage? That is... un-American. I don't know how else to describe it! The American dream (where anybody can make it big and get rich) would be squashed by a limit on income.
The war will be done with soon enough (or not soon enough, really). The next person voted in will most likely end it. The American empire is not going to fall because of the war on terror, or Iraq. I think you miss a key point to the success of America, and that is; dream big and work hard. As long as our people have this mentality (which the Soviets did not have, and is a large reason they fell) America will remain strong until there is a military force that could invade our streets, or if the rest of the world got angry enough with us to put a economic chokehold on us. Both of which are very unlikely. Call me an optimist. :)
I'm not some flag waving lunatic, I know we have our issues that are absurd or immoral or both. I don't necessarily believe in our current government, but I do believe in our people, and the foundations which our government was built on. Which is why I'm starting to sway a bit towards Paul, because I think he has the same outlook on America.
As of right now, our people are pissed. There will be some changes happening next election. Don't you worry, rest of the world!
