T.O.M.I. Device

Post by wheelmaster »

Has anyone here built this device. Could be something to look into.

I have. It works by making magnets (or metal) closer at the end point than the start point. Sometimes it's in the form of a track (TOMI tracks) which will continously pull in one direction. It does work, the ball, (or object) is propelled from one end to the other. (even on a slight incline up) Many people believe that if enough momentum is developed, the ball (or object) can overcome the strength of the end magnet, and could operate in a closed loop. (several linked together). Greg Watson played with a similar idea back in 1985, it was called the S.M.O.T (simple magnetic overunity toy). I gave up on these early, (not because I'm positive they won't work), but because magnets get expensive and I don't think JB used this approach. I still keep things like this in the 'open' file at the back of my mind though, just in case.

wheelmaster,

I too have had my years of playing with magnets.

There are many links and plans for such devices all over the internet. Back in the first Iraqi war (Bush Senior), The UN weapons inspection team allegedly found large tube like cannons in the desert which were considered to by magnetic cannons manufactured in France. I do remember some pictures being in the news media.

a Google search for "magnetic cannon" should lead you to a number of hits. here is one that contains a number of simple toys. you will find magnetic rail gun in the left hand column.

Are you sure about that? Looks like the magnets are an equal distance apart.

Ralph,

Thanks for the link.

What I am looking for is someone who has built this device. Don`t have any Rare-Earth Neodymium-Iron-Boron Grade N40 Magnets or else I would build it myself.

I'm sure that's how SMOT and TOMI tracks work, but you're right, this is different, it looks a lot like the 'Gaussian Gun' someone post a link to a while back. (The site was 'grand illusions') It does look impressive, and it looks like it would be easy to make a circular track and 'close the loop', but I'm a skeptic with magnets, I've played with them too long, my gut tells me it won't work. (But that doesn't mean I've ruled out magnets as part of a solution)

As you can see by this screen shot the side magnets have separation points equal to the launching magnets size. I marked the poles to make to easy to understand. Don`t quote me on this but this is how I think it works.

Could the runner magnet be place in the center and still launch?
If so, why not just make a circular horizontal track with an arm attached to the runner magnet.

The arm would be attached to a generator.

This may be the wrong forum to bring up magnets but I can`t get over the fact that Bessler had a loadstone in his final inventory.

Wheelmaster, I'm intrigued. The magnets all look to be of equal size and spacing. Unlike a SMOT arrangement. If it was started from the middle it's likely the cylinder of magnets wouldn't have the inertia (or momentum) to escape the end gate and would hang. Maybe? We can't be sure without building it. I personally don't want to abandon the direction I'm going right now. But I also think maybe we aren't seeing the whole thing. Could there be additional magnets (or something) under the table? Is the table level? I'm not saying this can't work, or that there is any intentional deception involved, I'm just not sure without a build. I can also say that it does look powerful enough to complete a horizontal circular track. Experience still tells me NO, but back when I was fascinated with magnets (85-92), those magnets he's using just weren't available to me $$$. (...and probably still aren't) I too have fallen under the spell of magnets, and I'm willing to bet you have also considered how to overbalance a wheel with them. (Magnets seem to act so similar to gravity, that it would 'seem' simple to flip one over at the bottom of a wheel and lighten just one side of the wheel using repulsion).

I to got into magnets in that same time period. All started with the SMOT and I still play around with them today. My current build involves magnets and weights. Been looking around the web to see all the configurations that have be proven.

What gets me about this design is ………
Does it gain its force from the initial push of the runner magnet into the field or can it be placed anywhere?????
How much force it takes to enter the field does not concern me. The amount of force gained is what I am looking for.

Maybe Ralph or another respected member knows.

The best place I have found to buy magnets.

http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/detail-ID-125.html

Not a bad price but I like to do as much research as possible before beginning a build. It would take 80 to 100 of theses to build it at an est. cost of $120.00 to $150.00.

Best to ask others who have already made this investment.

maybe he hid the ends of the cylindrical weights in a handkerchief so that you could not see the slice of loadstone glued to each end........the problems I have with magnets is if loadstone was the best in its day its a very very weak force.

Two problems Jon .. loadstones were extremely weak as you have already said & they act just like gravity except in any direction you want - still conservative though.

Forgive me for not using an exact Bessler quote. Don`t have time to look it up.

It can be found in nature
It is the quality of the materials.....
maybe he hid the ends of the cylindrical weights in a handkerchief so that you could not see the slice of loadstone glued to each end
Why use lead weights instead of steel? Lead is a soft metal. With all that rolling on warped boards and hitting the side I think lead would make a poor choice.

Why cover the weight unless magnets were attached to it.

The handkerchiefs were there imo to create an air of intrigue/mystery & to stop any grease getting on the hands & clothes of the witnesses - not a good first impression perhaps.

Or so groves in the metal would not show.
