I have been assigned a Masters Thesis work on ' Can Airships Solve Broadband wireless communication problems ', and it is not a practical one , but I need to work on a good research oriented question and try to solve the problem as much as I can .
I have been suggested by my Tutor to go through a research oriented question related to computers or wireless sensor networks in airships like interference in the signal links (or) whether the protocols used between platforms and user terminals are reliable .
can you suggest a few more questions in the areas I have mentioned .

My village has a wireless antenna atop the village water tower. But the village sits in a valley and I live five miles out with a hill in between, so the signal is too weak to use. Five miles of copper phone line degrades dialup modem signals to about 24.6 kps which sucks. The local cable network stops about a mile outside the village. Cell phone reception is very weak at about one bar if you step out on the porch or hold the phone to the window. Inside the house is strong enough to cause the phone to ring but not quite strong enough for uninterrupted conversation.
I now have a WildBlue satellite internet dish. It works most of the time except when a heavy storm between Michigan and Fort Wayne, Indiana blocks the signal beam. It's not as fast as cable. Also for some technical reason all of the Godaddy.com hosted websites that use shared IP addresses don't work. I have to revert back to using the dialup. As soon as they start to load I can kill the dialup and the rest of the page will load through the satellite.
Also when BesslerWheel.com gets busy the satellite system truncates the web page, which really sucks because it's the last few unread posts that fail to display. I just hit the dialup button and then hit refresh and they slowly load OK.
I don't think an airship antenna array would be cost effective. It would be too costly to deploy and too costly to maintain. Cell phone towers are cheep to build and maintain. Wireless internet antennas on existing structures like the ones on our village water tower are very cost effective. I figure that when my 1-1/2 year satellite contract is up there will a wireless antenna array available in my area.
Of course if you live in a metropolitan area cable and wireless networks are fast, already available and not terribly expensive. Living in a rural area has both advantages and disadvantages.
PS. We had our first significant snowfall today.

hiiii,
iam eagerly waiting for some good research questions....its not about cost or maintenace....just think of the idea.....that with the use of airships...we can solve major broadband problems......once when it comes into use...we can reduce the cost....by monitoring it closely....and modifying it to our day to day require ments.....

What altitude is the minimum safe altitude they can be tethered at to allow good coverage ?
Will they be an air safety hazard that the aviation industry will accept as necessary ?
Will the CAA [FAA] have to file daily NOTAMS [notices to airman] about their position & altitude so pilots can avoid them ?
Who will cover the cost of damage [insurance coverage] if one breaks free from its tether & eventually comes down uncontrolled, & where ?

A company called Sanswire were supposed to have launched their first 'stratellite' in 2005, I can't find any info that they actually did, although they unveiled their shiny new airship to the media and DoD officials in April 2005.
