If you look at the 3 wheel wood cuts bessler left us with.
clue 3. all 3 show the a rope wound anound the wheels axle and a weight hanging from the rope.
clue 2 shows 2 of the wheel locked with a pad lock.
clue 1. only in the water pump wheel woodcut can you determen the wheels rotation. and that the rope will unwined when the lock is releast turning the wheel in the right direction for start up.
As i see it any gravity wheel can be self-starting if you use besslers starter rope all you need is a way to lock the wheel from turning, bessler pad locked his wheel to the ground. then wound a rope around the axle and hung a weight from it.
now the wheel is locked and loaded and ready to self start.
all you need to do is unlock the wheel then give it a little push and the weight will fall converting gravity to rotational speed for the wheel.
a gravity wheel is not unlike a lawnmower engine in that it needs internal rotation for the fuel, air and spark (or its internal workings) to start the engine running on its own.
at least thats what it looks like to me
self-starting wheel

re: self-starting wheel
Hi Arjay30; I believe the first two wheels Bessler made did not have the rope, bucket and pulley. They were just tied off and all one had to do to start them was unhook the cord and they would start by themselves,I dont know if you have John Collins book or not but it tells you all about Bessler and all of his wheels, a very good read!
