Bessler's axle?

Well anyway...Parson made this Patent around 1885:

This shows the engine rotating about the crankshaft axis.

This animation has a different frame of reference. Here the cylinder assembly is held still. It shows the crankshaft axis describing a circle, demonstrating that in reality the cylinder assembly does not just rotate, but follows an epicyclic path as its bearing is offset from the crankshaft axis. Hope that's clear...

Thanks for the Museum/Power link, I clicked on the home page and enjoyed going through the all the sections. I was very entranced with the railroad steam engine collection.

I spent the better part of two hours thumbing through what this site has to offer.

The topic of Bessler's axle is interesting. I too, believe there is more to the axle than just holes. It may be that in the center on the outside frame there is a pipe that only extends a short distance in on each side supported by a solid innershaft that rides on roller bearings. This way, only the outside rotates while the inside remaims fairly stationery performing a motion that can be transmitted to the outside frame. That capability is demonstrated in drawing 51.

I don't believe there are eyewitnesses who state that they looked through the axle to verify that it was hollow. If there were, then that shoots this theory.

Who can tell me where I can find information about the cavities in the axle?
Did Johann talk about them himself or are there some witnesses that have seen the axle?

He only made a passing statement about there being compartments and piercings in his axle as a response to Wagner. Wagner was attempting to duplicate Besslers wheel using a turnspit type of arrangement which had a split axle. Bessler denied his axle was anything of the sort.
