Approaching 10,000 posts... and another prize drawing!
As you might know, besslerwheel.com had its 100,000th visitor recently, which we celebrated by holding a random prize drawing. Since we were celebrating the general visitation here at the website, the drawing was open to everyone who became a member of the board, which is free and open to all. Congratulations, Leinadd44, on winning the drawing! Bessler's Apologia Poetica will be arriving in your mailbox soon.
We are now approaching another milestone here on the discussion board, that is the 10,000th discussion board post. To mark this occasion I've decided to hold another drawing, this time for people who've posted to the board, for a free copy of John Collins' latest publication, Bessler's Das Triumphans. (~ $45 value)
Now, I don't know (or care) what the best threshold for the number of posts should be. So I'm putting the question up for a vote: How many posts should be required for a member's eligibility in this prize drawing?
Thanks to all who've posted here on the board for helping us reach this next milestone. Good luck and keep those posts coming!
Scott
P.S. and thanks again to John Collins for making this all possible

He means just the General Discussion board, which is at 4758.
Whoo, 1000!

Jonathan's right, Fletch. I meant the General Discussion. Should have been more specific.Fletcher wrote:My Post Counter says 5844 posts as of today?

Congrats Jonathan. I might have to come up with a new ranking for you... :-)Jonathan wrote:Whoo, 1000!

Let's call this new ranking "Jonathan".
BTW, as of this post, my percentage is 100*1001/5851=17.12%, down from 25.8%.
I voted don't care, I think Leinard44 will make good use of the book.

Well! Since there's going to be a chance for John's new book, I'll guess I'll just have to hold off ordering one until afterwards... ;)

Hi Everybody,
Some of you might remember this topic from a few months ago. I had intended to give away a copy of John Collins' translation of Bessler's Das Triumphans way back then to celebrate the 5,000th post on the General Discussion board, but various things conspired to keep me from following through. (Fortunately, it appears that no one noticed anyway).
Well, here we are a few months later and we're already approaching 10,000 discussion board posts overall, so I figured I'd revive the prize drawing to celebrate!
So far, we have just 18 votes and a small plurality favoring limiting the contest to users who've made 10 or more posts.
So if you haven't posted much here on the board and you want to be eligible for the prize drawing, now's the time to either vote or start posting!

I think it should be a combination; a minimum amount of posts and a skill testing trivia question on a previously posted topic (like who first posted about WM2D). So those who are lurking/working very hard on their wheels/don't have too much to say but pay attention can win too.

Any amount less than fifty would be ok with me. That really sounds like a neat book.

Just make it a random selection - otherwise it gets so complicated that poor Scott will have a seizure.

OK everyone, we are quickly approaching 10,000 posts! And the current consensus is that only members who have made at least 10 posts will be eligible for the drawing. As of today, that means that just 69 out of 196 members will be eligible. So for most of you out there, now is the time to either vote for a lower threshold or start making some posts!
Good luck to all,
Scott
Good luck to all,

Tada! We did it. Congratulations everyone, the counter passed 10,000 posts a couple of days ago. Time to hold the drawing...
Since a clear majority (51%) voted to set the requirement at 10 posts, that's what I did. That means that just 68 out of 168 active members were eligible for the drawing. (Sorry lurkers!)
Congratulations Epi! A copy of John Collins' publication of Bessler's Das Triumphans will be on its way shortly.

P.S. And thanks for agreeing to cover the shipping charges to Fiji! :-)

Code: Select all
First, I selected the eligible users (i.e. users that have made at least 10 posts, besides myself and the Anonymous account):
sql --> SELECT * FROM `phpbb_users` where user_posts >= 10 and username != "Anonymous" and username != "scott";
result --> 68 rows in set (0.09) sec
Then I randomly picked a row using the sql RAND() function.
And the winner is...
