Since you have it built (and I hope not yet destroyed), could you do me a favor? Remove two balls, tie the thing down well, and try it again. As you know I built a SMOT and it seemed like it could be closed looped, but I could never get it to work. I tried a one ball variant of the SMOT wheel you built, on the believe that having three balls gave a balanced wheel, and so gravity would be unable to play a role as it had in the linear version, and it didn't work. But it was never clear if it was the device or my building.
PS My wheel didn't have balls, it had magnets, because I could never get even the linear version to work with balls, only rolling magnets.

I've taken off two steel bearings with one remaining. I've tied it down and tried it.
No good!! It slows down to a stop.....same result (ballanced wheel)
