160revolutions

Post by carloluna »

my wheel turns for 160 times without changing direction.
there are no motors or springs!
if any parameter is changed (even little) does not work.
I do not know why turn so long.
seems interesting?

Don't trust wm2d, but use the mechanism movements as a guide to real world constructions.

I have a wm2d mechanism that is perpetual: never stops!

Here is your file with some changes - upped the accuracy from 8 frames a sec to 100 - tracked system CoM [see how it looses Pe over time by loosing height] - see graph of rotation of main wheel [added low air friction to simulate some frictional looses, it had none] & it stops rotating in about 12 secs & reverses etc ad infinitum until it keels.

The size and weights are a little impossible. When using WM2d, I always use rulers and grid lines, and watch the weights. With a wheel this size, air resistance will affect it significantly.

I love the dual chaos pendulum in the centre.

Cheers

please DrWhat: I want to see the mechanism wm2d of which you speak

to Fletcher:self-irony
I thought about air resistance to a place very suitable. they could be used as a monument (with a small engine)

Yes you could ship it to the moon but you could not escape some bearing friction losses which means the CoG/system CoM of the whole wheel will oscillate beneath the center of rotation [CoR] until it reaches its lowest height & least Pe gravity - that's the keel position where it is balanced & CoM is lowest vertically beneath the axle.

P.S. I use air resistance on low as a quick & dirty approximation of ALL frictions, that is, if I have a sim that that doesn't loose energy, & it won't loose energy if it has no frictions ;7) - basically the program is doing exactly what you tell it to do.

Fletcher thanks for the explanations and to amend my wm2d.
I do not yet know all the possibilities of working model.
your tips are very useful.
drWhat thanks for your wm2d very interesting.

sorry for the late reply (and for my bad English caused by
machine translation). the post had disappeared by mistake ...
thanks to Scott for having restored.

I note that in my wm2d the pair cylinder-stick seems to give
more energy to the system.

i add another engine that I assume to move the CG system in the direction of movement
