Gravity motor motto...
.....or a proposed short saying,that we can adopt,in my opinion ,as a rule,so to imagine a gravity motor,can be : "long fall down-short jump up".
If we collect more and more power ("long fall down" ) ,we can restart easy ("short jump up") the process:it comes to be self-acting ?!
Thinking contrary :with a greater and greater output,for a constant (small) input...

.....is a simple suggestion of terms,,to put forward for consideration....nothing more.
You can take this topic as a decent challenge,dispute so to figure simply,in a couple of words,your fancy,mental image regarding this "impossible" ,but so desirable motor,intended to impart "free" motive power due to fall in the gravitational field...

In a "ponderous" meaning of this motto,the essnce is "heavy vs.light".
As I know,your main image-idea is regarding "avalanche" phenomenon,and you are on the correct line.
Here,as I see the things,you have a problem,maybe...
The problem is related to the design (see MT 110-113 ,mainly MT 113),you can find in so many shapes ...and more precisely about the belt/chain:it can't connect and balace /compare "heavy" with "light".
The basic phenomenon of a possible gravity motor is quite this "avalanche "/gravity free fall.
We can say,as a motto,also: "no fall(avalanche...),no power".
An inverted pendulum,falling 180*(full up-down) plays this phenomenon,also.
A counterweighted inverted pendulum,alike.
If the masses are identical(weight/bob and counterweight ),the game becomes "long arm-short arm" ,with the longer arm ,on the same side of the fulcrum.,
If the masses are not identical (weight and counterweight),the game moves into the torque difference,on the same side of the fulcrum.
Remains a single question,about the "self" :the apparent difficulty can be the fact that is so obvious,plain...

Yep, Alex, it's so obvious and there isn't difficulty.
I think of the image of avalanche when the heavy pile is set free to fall.
Generally I like to think of the start, when the pile is an externally hold potential and all pressure is punctually applied on wheel's perimeter.
This is the moment when stuffs are prepared to happen and one will see, in the very first moment, as complete set will behave as a 2 arms balance...
... and the weight wins counterweight.
It will speed and the wheel must to be managed at gentle turn.

For me,the avalanche is an "expressive word"...it's not that of a heavy mass ,as you can see a snow avalanche.
As a rule,a snow avalanche starts with a small sliding mass.
A small (constant) mass,in a long (distance,time) gravity fall can be compared with an avalanche effect...that's all.
Simply it's gravity fall (mass related to v=g*t and especially Ek=1/2*m*v*v),when moved,transfered from gravity into rotational inertia (as a temporary storage):it's like a "rotational avalanche".
By the way,do you believe that "belt/chain" designs class can play in reality torque difference?

I saw kind of avalanches with the assembling of my first model! The 40kg pile falls in a fraction of a second, loudly, free and happy!
YES, I believe that my design will work very fine.
Repeat: if avalanchedrive will not work, absolutely none of the other candidates wheel design will work.

The 'pile falls free and so on': in some experiments I have done just with the heavy pile and a very bad hooks wheel model... was kind of accidents.
This happened also when I try to see that the 'charge' could be really accumulated and free applied in a single button corner of the chain, exactly over the wheel perimeter.
In my complete set, this mandatory maximum press point still is there - if the proportions are kept as designed - the heavy pile will fall at half velocity and double weight, while lighter will rise at max. managed higher velocity.
The trick is this: the managed velocity is not the 'g' NATURAL fall velocity. The differential of 'managed' velocity and the 'natural' one will be possible throughout a 'resistance' applied over wheel's axle.
Believe me, the summed force of that pile is huge and violent, AS an avalanche IF let to fall FREE!

In my opinion ,you play "greater weight on one side".../equal arms.
Most people (including me ),play "greater arm on one side"... /equal masses.

So,you need firstly, to discover something ...as an "unseen flow".
If not,you must "organize" a visible flow/fall,because ,you know :"no flow,no power".
The fortune is that,as electricity,what is invisible sometimes becomes visible...
The problem of "blades" is secondary...the turbine diversity is so great.
