Peaucellier's linkage

Post by DrWhat »

You've probably seen this before and I'm not sure why I'm throwing it in here but could be useful.

To use this device that I have also played with has the 2 different mounts. The shifting is cool but it also has a friction not unlike the v wheels close on one side and wide on the other for expansion and compression. This does not mean it is not useful but it may be of use in another form of chain reaction to over take the friction effect.

I was thinking about a use for this, but could not remember the name of the movement or exactly how it worked.

So I'm adding this picture to my picture album so I can easily find it again.

I have done many a WM2D simulation with this setup arranged around the circumference of a wheel but to no avail. Many of these designs expanded on this basic idea by extending the outside linkages into scissor jacks. Even still they did not work...

What I'm really looking for is linkage to use in place of bevel gears. The rotation needed is about 1/3 of a revolution, so that when one axis rotates then the other axis also rotates. If a mirror mechanism were added to the right side of the Peaucellier linkage animation then it would act like two meshing gears. Then if you tilt the mirror mechanism around the vertical dotted line in the animation picture you have the equivalent of meshing bevel gears.

It seems rather complicated but it might be cheaper in some cases than buying bevel gears.

I'm sure you thought of it already but just in case, If your not supporting huge loads and its just for POP then you can make a poor mans bevel set by having discs at 90 with rubber for traction on one riding on the surface of the other. Many an old crafstman tractor or snowblower uses this exact same drive system. What some laymen think is they have a fancy standard or auto trans when really all they are doing in moving the driven shaft/pulley closer to the axis or further away for more speed.

Its always funny when i hear someone tell me the trans blew on their lawn tractor. LMAO I ask if it was the spring or the rubber disc? they look at me like i don't know whats going on.

Or you could just buy some fancy bevel gears, cmon, drop in the bucket of on this journey.

There are other factor involved. There would need to be about 24 bevel gears at about twelve inch diameter each, which gets little expensive. Then there is the weight of the gears to be concerned about.

Hi Jim

Perhaps pairs of small hydraulic cylinders(push/pull) linked to the respective "radius arms"?

Should keep angular movement constant.

Dear Jim_Mich,
Let's rotate your picture within 90 grades clockwise, you get an excellent parametric pendulum.

edited:
There are two kinds of Peaucellier linkage, depending from the position of the first lozenge summit (outside or between the two pivots).
The picture below shows the second configuration (the lozenge summit between the two pivots):

I cannot imagine why nobody though on this before, including myself? It is so simple!...

I hope you find this informative.

Peaucellier's linkage mechanism becomes a walking wheel.
