I wonder; will this settle any old arguments or begin new ones?

I hope it begins new ones, we know that Gravensande wrote to Newton, yet we dont know of any reply. It seems like the trail cant just end like that, there had to be someone at the society discussing Besslers claims. Somewere in those 60,000 papers there has to be something of interest to us, at least I hope there is

The search engine for these Royal Society documents is not very good. Searching for Bessler or Orffyreus do not returns ant results. But searching for "perpetual motion" returns 15 results. In this entry there is talk by Desaguliers about Bessler's wheel and why perpetual motion cannot work. One problem with the search may be that the documents were obviously scanned and then converted to text by a character recognition program. Many of the letter 's' show as letter 'f'. Thus Hesse-Cassel is shown as Heffe-Caffel. The word 'those' become 'thofe' and so on.

Reading it is difficult until can get your brain wrapped around the task of converting 'f' into 's', then it become readable.

I tried, but if you look at the document (which I'm posting as a picture below) you can see why the search is unsuccessful.

Hi Jim , we know that Desagulier is right from the experiments we've all done in the past, I'm still looking for a loop-hole in Newtons Law.

I had some free time today, the weather is really crappy here, so I poked around on the Royal Sociaty website, this is all I found so far, that might be of interest to some.

I still think there is a lot more to be learned from this site

I'm still reading those old documents with interest. Those of you that are interested in the politics of the 1700's might find this interesting. It was published in 1727, the same year Bessler was on trail for freud. Desaguliers seems to be making excusses for beleiving in Besslers wheel and kissing Newtons @ss .

For what it is worth; I do not believe it is an @ss kissing but rather he is using Newton as a 'crutch'... He is referring to Newtons objective approach making it simple to justify that hypothetical math will not always prove to be true.

IMO Desaguliers said in 1727 the same thing I have been stating all along. Math alone will not solve Bessler's secret and one must rely on mechanics.

I have made a copy-paste of the pertinent data and saved it in a .txt file for editing into modern English.
