Yeah, I remember how painful dial up used to be!
I will never go back to it!

Trev.. Broadband will come down in price eventually. I am paying $60 Australian a month for 20 gig's allowance.. Dial-up was 25 a month. It used to be double that about a year ago! Competition is slowly driving the prices downwards..
The limits of the possible can only be defined by going beyond them into the impossible.

Gordy and SeaWasp, thanks for the advice but I live in a really remote area that is very sparsely populated, broadband is possibly going to be available soon but only from one company that will have a monopoly. They are talking about €30/$40 month plus a couple hundred setup fee.
Dont think I'll be able to afford it any time soon. :(

I, too, intend to get a broadband connection in the future. But, I want a cable modem, not DSL. A cable modem is about 100 times faster than my present 56 kbps modem and dial up connection. I'm waiting until they can get the price per month under $20 USD...I think it will happen in another year or so.

On 7/6/06, I found, in any overbalanced gravity wheel with rotation rate, ω, axle to CG distance d, and CG dip angle φ, the average vertical velocity of its drive weights is downward and given by:

Vaver = -2(√2)πdωcosφ

Hi Terry, I did look at them a year or so ago but they were big money and you needed a dialup for upload. Maybe I'll check and see if they have come down in price.

I thought that satellite connections used something similar to a cell phone up link. If you had a satellite you could hook up a network and start running wire to your neighbors. I think you're allowed to have a network. If they're interested you could defray the costs or maybe even make a few bucks.

Gene, the company thinking of installing broadband are planning on using a satellite up/down link which they'll then distribute thru the local telephone exchange. This is the only realisic option for the location.
As for running a cable to my neighbors house, it's 2Km away and he wouldn't want it :)

I see. So there's no shortage of sticks where you're at? There was this family back home that was so far off the main road that the power company wanted to charge them to run a line. They never had power. The mom ironed with iron irons that she heated on their wood stove. Their washing machine was propane powered. Good to hear you have a phone. :)

My house is the end of the phone lines, they dont go any farther out the peninsula. My electric comes from my own hydro electric generator, I finished building it about about a year ago, before that I used to run a light and laptop from my car battery. As for sticks, that's what's keeping me nice and warm right now :)
