This is a complete build of a crossbar.

Can you tell which direction it will turn? One side is always heavier, which side?

Where are your pivots on the lazy tongs? I don't know what direction the parts are going.

I like what you are doing. Get the lazy tongs to pull against the springs so as the tension comes off the lazy tongs, the springs pull the weight back into the middle.

Yep... that's good....

2 cans of corn?!
I like this can-of-corn-and-springs build. It's so simple, so direct, removes the weight from one side and moves it to the other. What a great prank!
This is going to be a build the whole family can enjoy when it's time to cannibalize it.

I love sweet corn.

Heavy on top, right? c.w. ?

The jolly green giant has spoken! Lol!

I think this wheel holds promise. Of what I don't know, but I think the cans of corn add a flavour I haven't seen in any other wheel. Most others stink of perspiration and failed dreams. Thus one is different. :)

I think it shall be called the Libby wheel. I want Libby Libby Libby on my label label label.

I'm in the process of specifying materials now, Jubat. Instead of copper pennies, I've decided to upgrade to quarters. I need a consistent mass and want more than a zinc penny. Copper pennies are getting very rare, coin collecters hoarding them I guess. That and the scrap value of a copper penny is 3 cents.

The principle embodied in this wheel is
  • If money makes the world go 'round, why not a wheel?
Leafy's idea of pitting orthogonal forces brings to mind Nikola Tesla's induction motor. Elon Musk is no longer using an induction motor, by the way.

I still don’t like this design. Too complicated.

In a bessler wheel there just isn't time for mechanisms to move a whole lot and especially at the speeds the prank wheel turned.

Whatever mechanism bessler used in his wheel probably was some tight knit mechanism right at the hub that self shifted the axle in relation to the wheel or the wheel in relation to the axle or even both.

With WC wanting a consistent mass, that speaks to me of a wheel that falls over itself.

If you can put a flywheel on a hub that ever so slightly can shift it over, you'll have rotation. If the toys page is depicting this, one could conclude the bottom toy is the axle and the top toy is the wheel. Pry them apart this way and then pry them apart that way every 180 degrees...and well...you will at the very least have fooled yourself into thinking it could work.

Others have made this point, I made it in Wubbly's thread I just bumped up.

I just read the last few pages of it. Interesting stuff.

Weights 90 degrees to each other and dissimilar arrangement between 2 halves.

Disorganization prevents gravity from parking it.

Marchello did this animation based on different Bessler wheels.

Wubbly did a fantastic job leading that discussion.

Hi Leafy.

Once upon a time we all probably investigated this. The spring (or weight) has to pull up at the top, but it also has to pull up at the bottom. Springs only work in one direction. If you have the spring suspended at the top with an RB all the time, it will negate the effect of OB / gravity actuation.

Hey Tarsier,

What’s an RB?

Are you talking about the seesaw?

Roberval balance could be used to keep the spring at the top.

Anyway, this is your problem: (see images)

Yes, you’re right. It’ll always be bottom heavy when it goes 180 or when it face bottom half.
