Why does the Offset Gyro disk, as it orbits its support, rotate in a direction as though it is skidding along on the roof rather than the floor?
This has always puzzled me since it seemed counter intuitive. It seemed as though it was trying to oppose the orbital motion.
If the gyro is given a small push along its orbit it will rear up and the ratio of the two velocities will change.
When working in the Structural Engineering Division of BRE I had a colleague, Graham Armer (of the Wood and Armer equations), who used to say that whenever he had a problem he always looked at the boundary condition. His ghost must have inspired me because when I did this things became very clear.

I see now that harnessing the horizontal moment of the offset gyro to a capstan will give us a source of reaction power, something Laithwaite demonstrated but did not understand.
