Bill, now that I know you're using IE, I'm less concerned. Please use Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or even Safari instead. :-)
Thanks,
Scott

I came across the following thread in phpBB forums:

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... #p12803102

It would appear that it is not unique to BesslerWheel.com.

I agree, Bill. Especially if one is limited to a dial-up or slower DSL connection.

Still chucklin' over that one, Scott.

Okay, let me take a few more whacks at this dead horse...

IE8 does not work well with XP, works a little better with Vista, but was really designed to work with Windows 7. I say this based on my personal experience and what I had read on Microsoft's help forums, before deciding to quit using IE. The problems that people are having with IE are not going to be fixed by Microsoft, as they are currently developing IE9 which is scheduled to be spewed forth in 2011. By the way, I found out tonight that IE9 will support Vista, but not XP.

I also recommend using a browser other than IE. The only one I have experience with is Mozilla Firefox. No conflicts with the Operating Systems here (XP Home, XP Media Center), less security issues, etc. Installation/transition was surprisingly easy and quite painless. :-)

Just in case anyone can use the information, the items below are copied and pasted from IE6 help dialog boxes. They correspond to the settings in IE8 (which no longer has the selectable help dialog).

Every visit to the page --
Specifies that when you return to a page you viewed previously, Internet Explorer should check to see whether the page changed since you last viewed it. If the page has changed, Internet Explorer displays the new page and stores it in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Note that selecting this option can slow down browsing between pages you have already viewed.

Every time you start Internet Explorer --
Specifies that when you return to a page you viewed previously, Internet Explorer should not check to see whether the page has changed since you last viewed it. Internet Explorer will check for new content only when you return to a page that was viewed in an earlier session of Internet Explorer or on a previous day. Selecting this option can speed up browsing through pages you have already viewed.
If you want to see the most current version of a specific page, even when this option is selected, open the page, click the Refresh button on the toolbar.

Automatically --
Specifies that when you return to a page you viewed previously, Internet Explorer should not check to see whether the page has changed since you last viewed it.
If you select this, Internet Explorer will check for new content only when you return to a page that was viewed in an earlier session of Internet Explorer or on an earlier day. Over time, if Internet Explorer determines that images on the page are changing infrequently, it will check for newer images even less frequently.
Selecting this option can provide the most speed when browsing through pages you have already viewed.
If you want to see the most current version of a specific page, even when this option is selected, return to the page, and then click the Refresh button on the toolbar.

Never --
Specifies that when you return to a page you viewed previously, Internet Explorer should never check to see whether the page has changed since you last viewed it. Selecting this option speeds up browsing between pages you have already viewed.
If you want to see the most current version of a specific page, even when this option is selected, open the page, click the Refresh button on the toolbar.

I had my two previous posts composed in notepad. When I copied them into the posting form, I missed this paragraph at the end of the first post:

For those considering switching from IE to another browser, keep this in mind; do not delete IE from your operating system!
In XP and Vista, it is needed for Windows Help and Support. In XP, Windows Update won't function without it. Also, you'll find it handy for the occasional web page that is 'only IE friendly'.

(I had edited this into the first post. Then I thought it would be better to make it a post on it's own, so it would be less likely to be missed by anyone that had already read that post.)

"do not delete IE from your operating system!"

Microsoft's clever way to keep asking you to update to newer versions of IE so that one day you return!

Go Mozilla Firefox!

Clever? I think, more like devious.

BTW... back in February, you advised installing Adblock. I've been running ABplus ever since.
My cyberworld is a much nicer place. Thanks, Damian.

It took some coaxing from Scott but I too am a firm believer in Firefox.

I cannot recall as to how long I have been using it, but once familiar I would never consider going back to IE.

I love the 'last FM' radio plug in and listen to it in 7.1 Dolby 8 channel stereo.

As for dumping IE I tried, but it would not let me, there are just some things that will only run in it. IE 7 was on my machine when I switched browsers, i have never upgraded it.

One thing I really appreciate is how Firefox downloads into a file under 'tools' where you can open or save at your convenience.

What I really love about it is you can set your own home page and never see a pop-up or advertisement.
