It's readily apparent that is in the interest of the affected countries to inflate casualty numbers to enlarge their share of the "aid" pot.
These late increases are probably largely this.
When you are talking about these numbers, it is rather easy to count the same bodies several times, and is in the benefit of the counters to do so.

Last I heard there were still tens of thousands of people missing and probably dead, but they are not yet reflected in the tallies.
