I should "qualify" my statement above....i don't see "Bessler's Wheel "using wild flinging weights,pendulums or magnets....i think the answer,if there is one ,is not one in complication which we tend to engage here but rather in simplicity ....and by trying to think in retrospect of the "times" he lived in, availabilty of resources and what was achievable.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon using differing increment weights on the( mag.clock)pendulum and finished at 12 ounces.....the weght lifted at the minute shaft maxed at 4 ounces when shudder started at the pallet ......i really would not wish to do any damage to the"dragons teeth" of the escapement wheel......it's a sweet little movement......would gearing enhance the lifting weight.......i think not ,so i'll not risk any damage and call a conclusion to this project....fun while it lasted.

For any young folk interested in building this "desktop toy"(to me its only use),i used 4 off 10mm x 5mm countersunk N.I.P. magnets 2KG pull (2 south poles and 2 north poles on c/s face)the pendulum rod must go to the pivot in one piece and eliminate the tolerance at the pivot to just swing free and no more.The pallets on the escapement crutch which catches the escapement wheel must be reversed so the escapement wheel "slips away".....does not climb...(see wilki...deadbeat escapement for diagram)(the hands go backward anti-clockwise)and check the tolerance that it catches and releases round the full circumference of the escape wheel(minute adustment may be required)this must be EXACTLY RIGHT ........as "work"is not required a pendulum total length of 18 inches should suffice(leave it long and test)and a pendulum weight of 5-7 ounces......an old weight driven clock mech.is ideal...........BEWARE of those N.I.P. magnets they can shatter if they clash and can jump one to another 6-8 inches....you have been warned ....Good Luck..

Bessler's wheels were connected to two pendulums, driven by the wheel's axle

Kirk,i have in the past examined the "drawing"and dismissed the pendulum's as "smoke and mirrors"so to speak,which i believe he included to confuse.....this is only my opinion..... i don't see the pendulums as "driving" but being "driven"by the "wheel"on account of the very long lever attachment positions to the pendulums and the" very short " con-rod type lever connection's to the axle .....thus completing the illusion as if were a "driving"force....

Bessler's wheel needed to be strait up and down for the mechanisms in the wheel could stop the wheel due to going off track. So the pendulums served a couple of reason, alignment and could help the shift on the inside of the wheel for they could cause a slight jerk. The others possible reason would be to distract those who saw the wheel, as well as the swinging could keep people back from the wheel from getting to close while running.

The problem with a driven pendulum is that it has a period for a certain length , any deviation from that period will turn the pendulum into a sledge hammer destroying the wheel . Is the pendulum not part of the clues Bessler left us , why was the axel 8 in in dia , why was it 6 ft long when only 18 in of the axel was used for the wheel . Maybe the pendulum drove something inside the axel , but not the wheel itself .

what will the length of the pendulum be to be able to period at 26 rpm . Also , from a slight push by hand , what will cause the pendulum to be crancked for a complete cycle , it must complete a full 180 deg before it will swing in the intended direction , from the crank of the shaft the wheel will need to turn 180 deg else it will fall back to the rest position .
