Well, it looks like the North Koreans (a key player in the "Axis of Evil") decided to celebrate America's 4th of July by shooting off some fireworks of their own. In this case it was a test of their new two stage Toapadong-2 intercontinental ballistic missile. That missile has the ability to strike targets on the west coast of the USA!

The missile, however, blew up about 20 seconds after leaving its launch pad and crashed into the Sea of Japan.

The media has been lampooning the RNK efforts at rocketry and saying how this "proves" that the fears about North Korea's nuclear capabilities are grossly overstated.

I strongly disagree! That rocket could have malfunction because of a small, easily corrected glitch.

I am now envisioning a scenario where, in order to bring some hard currency into their impoverished country, the North Korean government will start mass manufacturing nuclear ballistic missiles and selling them to whatever Third World country that wants to possess them for "defense". Maybe they will offer a single complete missile with a mobile launcher for, say, a flat $100 million USD. If they did, I suspect that they would have dozens of countries lining up to order them!

Yes, the West is now terrrified at the prospects of nuclear armed Iran. But, we already have a nuclear armed North Korea that is only too willing to export their technology to the highest bidder.

I wonder how long these scenarios will be tolerated before the West decides its time to stop talking and start bombing?

There's an interesting "breaking" news story just starting to come in on the cable news shows.

Apparently, the US Dept. of Homeland Security has managed to disrupt a plot to blow up the Holland Tunnel that connects Manhattan Island with my state of New Jersey! Supposedly, they learned of the plot by following various posts in chat rooms frequented by terrorists and the authorities even managed to arrest one of the plotters over in Beirut, Lebanon.

So, could this have been the next attack that Osama alluded to in his January audio tape which was what led to the creation of this thread?

Somehow, I do not feel that this recent "plot" was the "big one" that Osame referred to, but, rather, just a minor independent "free lance" operation by "fellow travelers" of Al Qaeda.

There are four tunnels that come out of the island of Manhattan. The Holland tunnel was constructed during the 1920's and runs about 93 below the surface of the Hudson River. I think I heard someone say that it is constructed from a tubular shell of cast iron that is 1.5 feet thick!

I do not think anything sort of a nuclear device could damage metal that thick. A very powerful truck bomb would, if detonated at the lowest point of the tunnel during "rush" hour, produce many casualties and chaos. But, most of its shock wave would be vented out longitudinally along the length of the tunnel in both directions without doing significant damage to the cast iron shell itself. To even believe that conventional explosives could damage that tunnel is amateurish at best. I think Al Qaeda is too sophisticated at this point in time to waste their financial resources on such a futile attempt.

Details are still emerging on the story, however. I'm wondering if the foiled plot would have involved a simultaneous attack on all of the New York City tunnels and bridges or just the Holland Tunnel.

Interesting and troubling news came in over the weekend.

Apparently, in response to North Korea's recent testing of their various missiles over the Sea of Japan, the US is moving some ships into the region.

Right now, the USS Mustim is docked at a port in Japan. This is our most advanced radar missile ship. How advanced? Well, it it was stationed off the eastern coast of the US, its phased array radar system could detect a missile launch anywhere from Maine down to Florida! However, it is not intended to stop the launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

I had wondered what it was doing so close to North Korean waters when I heard that the USS Enterprise is also on its way to the region. Then it all made sense. The USS Mustim (sounds like muslim!!!) must be there to provide extra defense for the aircraft carrier.

I think that, at this stage, these "deployments" are only intended to make the North Korean military uncomfortable and to get them to reconsider before test firing any new missiles. However, if they do then the US would be in a position to begin a carrier based attack on their launch sites.

If that was to happen, the who knows what the RNK's next move might be. I suspect that, feeling under attack, they might even begin an attack on Seoul, South Korea in which case the US would, once again, be embroiled in another Korean "Conflict". Most Americans are not even aware that the first such war actually cost about the same number of American lives in only four years as did the Vietnam "Conflict" did in about 12 years!

We live in perilous times...

Well, Osama released a new message today, but it was not in the form of an audio tape!

The news is just coming through now about a commuter train being blown up by seven bombs during rush hour over in Mumbai, India. This is probably one of India's most important financial hubs. So far there are 135 dead and over 200 injured. Rescue efforts are being hampered because India is now experiencing its Monsoon season and the rain can be very heavy.

Because of the date of this Madrid style terror bombing, 7/11, its obvious to me, even without an "official" investigation, that this is an Al-Qaeda operation from beginning to end. Osama promised that he would continue to attack any country that assisted the West in their "war" against terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan. This bombing was to put the government of India on notice that they, like Spain and England, will now be a target of Al-Qaeda terror attacks unless they immediately, as Spain did, remove their military forces from these two countries.

Well, quite sadly, the news out of Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India just keeps getting worse. Latest fatalities are about 200 with over 800 injured and many of them likely to die of their injuries in the coming day.

All of the Kasmiri militant groups say that they are not responsible. So that means the operation was probably carried out by Pakistani jihadists under the direction of Al-Qaeda trainers. The middle east is loaded with 19 to 24 year old muslim men who are disaffected and mad a the democratic systems in their countries. Their minds are fertile ground for the death worshipping cultish beliefs of the fundamentalist terrorists. How many are there? One terrorist that was caught claimed that he was told that Al-Qaeda estimated that there were about 100,000 of them worldwide!

Meanwhile, it's coming to light that the 7 communter trains attacked over in India had virtually no security whatsoever. This is understandable in India's largest city with a population of 16 million, half of whom depend on the overcrowded rail system for daily transportation.

Not only where the 7 or 8 bombs set to go off during their "rush" hour at the height of the monsoon season, but the explosions all took place in the first class section where the more affluent employees were riding. These people are more likely to be working for the many Western companies in the city. This all fits in with Osama's pledge to raise the cost of doing business in the Middle East to a point where the western capitalists will begin to look elsewhere for profit.

It's quite possible that the final death toll could reach about 300 which means that its far worse than the Madrid bombings.

I have been watching, with some interest, the recent 3 day old "incursion" of Israeli military forces into Lebanon. On the surface, it looks like the Israelis finally got fed up with all of the rockets being fired into northern Israel by Hezbollah militants and, since the Lebanese government seems unable or unwilling to do anything about it, Israel has decided to blast Hezbollah strongholds throughout southern Lebanon in the hopes of weakening their strength and presence there. Of course, the fact that an Israeli border patrol was ambused and two soldiers kidnapped into Lebanon helped serve as the final straw that "broke the camel's back" and prompted them to take action at this time.

However, it that what is really going on here? I do not think so.

In reality, what we are now seeing is a "proxy" war taking place between Israel and Syria and IRAN! That's right, this whole thing was, most likely, intigated by Iran because it is they that supply Hezbollah with arms and money and direction. For example, to the surprise of the Israelis, a missile landed in Haifa that had to travel over 40 miles from southern Lebanon...much farther than it was thought Hezbollah rockets could travel. Well, it turns out that rocket was supplied to the militants by Iran!

I suspect that Iran has created this incident, which most likely will not flare up into a full scale Middle Eastern war (the last one was back in 1973), but will serve to force the West to focus its attention on Israel, Lebanon, and Syria and away from Iran. Why? So Iran can proceed to continue the uranium enrichment needed to construct its first several battlefield ready nuclear weapons. Thus, this is really just a distraction for the media and the UN while the Iranian "government" continues its ongoing nuclear weapons development program.

Of course, I doubt if I am the only one to realize what is really going on here. Right now there is next to zero chance of the this latest regional conflict flaring up into a full scale war. However, if both Syria and Iran were equipped with nuclear weapons and the intermediate range ballistic missiles needed to deliver them, then that could be an entirely different matter. I believe that both Syria and Iran are feverishly working away to achieve a "first strike" capability against Israel. That day, unless the West intervenes, could be here within only five years!

Meanwhile the increasing "tension" in the Middle East has pushed world oil prices up to near $80 USD per barrel and some experts are predicting prices of up to $100 USD per barrel if the incursion is prolonged. At $100 USD per barrel, the price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the USA will hit about $5 USD per gallon...$2 more than were currently paying.

When that happens expect a big downturn in the US economy and the end of all optimistic talk about recovery. Also expect a major downturn in the US stock markets which are already down hundreds of points in the last three days alone!

Osama must be a very contented person at the moment...

The plot thickens!

Some of the Hezbollah leaders are bragging that they have up to 10,000 rockets that they intend to fire at northern Israel!

Apparently, Iran has been very busy supplying them with these missiles and the technical advisors so that they will know how to use them.

Now for the interesting part. Some of these missiles are intermediate range and can travel a distance of 60 miles. That means that they could, in principle, begin hitting targets in Tel Aviv which is a major commercial port city in Israel with a population of over 1 million people.

The other day I said that I felt that the present "conflict" between Israel and the militant group in Lebanon was probably not going to escalate into a serious regional war. However, I am not starting to lean away from that analysis and beginning to think that, indeed, this could turn into a MAJOR conflict between Israel and both Syria and Iran.

Well, I guess what will happen will be determined by whether Hezbollah is foolhardy enough to start dropping explosive warheads on Haifa and Tel Aviv. If that happens, then I see the possibility for a Israeli air campaign against Iran. That will involve the destruction of any suspect uranium enrichment facilities using bunker buster type munitions which their ally, the USA, will provide them with. And, of course, other pertinent military targets within Iran.

If that should happen, then all hell will break lose and the US could find itself personally involved in the most serious Mideast war todate!

Right now, it seems that the US's major problem is how to evacuate the 25,000 US citizens living in Lebanon as the violence begins to escalate there.

Stay tuned...

I know I will regret doing this....I've avoided it like the plague. But, here goes....

1. Where you sit...is where you stand.
2. If you look for something hard enough, you'll find it.
3. Legal and illegal...right and wrong, are not the same thing and should not be confused.
4. Nothing is 100%.
5. You can't make a gain without a sacrafice.

OK, if you're a liberal....Bush "stole" the election from Al Gore...and that's where you stand. If you're conservative...Bush won, get over it and move on....well, many just cannot do that. It has to be about the greedy oil business and taking the oil fields. You do not have to look hard to find this when we have a media who believes Bush "stole" the election. He "legally" won the election...it was not "right" the way it was done. Are all sure (100%), he is our president and we will accept that...me thinks not! There are those for the above reasons that believe the "sacrafice" of our country is worth getting their power (gain) back.

Anybody can be a Katie Couric...anybody...just watch the teleprompter and read. That's their job....just read. They don't write these stories...they are already prepared and edited before they hit the teleprompter. They work for people who like their power of persuasion and will replace them at the drop of a hat if they DO NOT read the teleprompter as it is and BELIEVE it! If you see the media any differently, you're lying to yourself.

You will not win elections if your only message is "Bush Sucks!" ...I know most people know this...why is that all we hear? Just what is their "new" message...what are their "ideas"? More of the same? Are they listening? The majority does not want anymore of that....

I did not leave the Democratic Party...they left me....I do not know these people anymore.

I found there to be much truth in your little list...

Concerning what appears to be the ongoing escalation of "tension" in the Middle East, it was reported overnight that Hezbollah managed to land a missile on a target in the port city of Tel Aviv. The missile crashed through the roof of a train station and killed 8 workers doing train maintenance. About 20 others were injured by the blast.

This is all starting to remind me of when Hitler was terrorizing the population of London with his V1 "Buzzbombs" and V2 rockets. At one point more civilians were being killed in London than British soldiers on the battlefields of Europe!

Anyway, now Hezbollah is proudly proclaiming that they have a large supply of missiles that can reach as far as...JERUSALEM!

Apparently, they have been given some "Zelzal" missiles that were developed in IRAN which can reach Jerusalem. I consider this latest revelation to be a major turning point in the ongoing conflict. A serious war could breakout between Israel and Iran and any moment now!

In an effort to be fair and balanced...

Killing civilians is wrong no matter how you frame it. It is equally wrong for Israel to send missles into Lebanon which indescriminately kills civilians. So far, Israel is ahead in the civilian body count.

Someone has said...
Isreal has a right to defend itself
And so it was that the trigger event was, in fact, the ambush of Isreali soldiers on July 12th and subsequent capture of two said soldiers.

How evil!... oh wait... It was on Lebanon's side of the border!!!

Did they mention that in the news? huh?! Trust your news as much as you can throw it. What's that? You can't throw news? So now you know how much to trust it!

Ken,

Wait.... stop the presses!

First, are you Jewish? It seems Behrendt is a name many Jewish people have in history. Second, do you have Israeli citizenship?

I just want to know who is giving these comments, and perhaps I will understand you're reluctance to disagree/believe anything I write which may question the "Islamic terrorists" as such or present the Israeli state as an agressor.

Everyone aware of the UN resolution that the US veto'ed. A very bad sign. I couldn't believe it. Go google it, and see how warped the reasons for the veto were.

No, although I have some Jewish friends, I am not Jewish, but, rather, of German, Austrian, Polish descent.

According to the Israeli's, their border patrol was inside of Israel proper when it was attacked by Hezbollah terrorists and two soldier were captured...the rest were killed.

The situation in the Middle East is a complex one, indeed, with each side claiming the other started it. This conflict has been ongoing now for almost 60 years and still shows no signs of being resolved.

For example, Hezbollah said that they offered to exchange the two captured soldiers for some prisoners that Israel was illegally holding for almost 30 years in its prisons and that it was Israel that refused to make the exchange which could have prevented the present bloodshed. What the Hezbollah spokesperson did not say was that the persons being held in the Israel prisons were former terrorists that had been captured in the 1970's after they planned the murder of Israeli citizens!

Anyway, the other day something quite interesting happened.

The Arab League has an emergency meeting to discuss the battle going on between Israel and Lebanon and reached a consensus conclusion that it really was Hamas and Hezbollah that were responsible for the recent escalation in violence and that, indeed, Israel was in the right! When I heard that, I almost could not believe it...muslims agreeing with Israel for a change!!!

The reason? The members of the Arab League are well aware that Iran is behind the present flare up in tension and that this is all part of Iran's ongoing efforts to establish a Shia based "cresent" of influence that will span from Iran through Iraq and Syria to Lebanon. That hegemony will be reinforced by Iran's possession of nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them. Most of the pro-West Arab countries definitely do not want that extension of Iran's power to ever occur.

So, what will be the outcome of the present conflict? Right now, I can see no easy solution. If the diplomats broker a cease fire, then Hezbollah will simply use it to re-stock their supply of rockets (future versions of which could carry Iranian nuclear warheads!). If Israel finally conducts a land invasion of southern Lebanon, then they will have to station troops there and they will be subject to continuous bombardment with rockets.

I'm starting to think that one must treat terrorists like cancer. If one does not wipe all of it out, then one is only buying some time until what survives eventually grows, spread, and again poses a threat to one's survival!

Randall...

Yes, the loss of innocent civilians in any military operation is truly tragic and every effort should be made to minimize it.

However, I am wondering if the loss of innocents as a result of Israel's current offensive against the Hezbollah militants might not help strengthen the resolve of the legitimate government of Lebanon to finally outlaw Hezbollah and then take steps to stop them from launching attacks on Israel. Maybe this unfortunate episode will convince the people of Lebanon that they also should not tolerate the presence of Hezbollah in their midst and do what they can to inform on them to their government so that they can be removed from their society.

I think the problems of the Middle East can only finally go away when the day comes that the surrounding Arab peoples finally realize that Israel is not going to just pick up and move out of the region so that the Palestinians can take over. That's simply not going to happen and the continuing pretense by the militants that it is going to happen is only making life worse for their people and delaying improvements in their economies that could greatly raise their standards of living.

Well, peace will eventually come...but, only when they get tired of fighting for an impossible dream...

Anyway, I saw on the cable tv news channels that Israeli troops are now moving into southern Lebanon. By now, Hezbollah has, of course, moved most of their stock of missiles out into middle Lebanon and will, no doubt, continue to launch them at the advancing Israeli defense forces. Before another few weeks have passed, Israel will probably be in control of the entire country while the militants flee into neighboring Syria (the Jordanians surely won't let them back into their country). And there they will sit, planning to move back in just as soon as the UN brokers some sort of "peace" deal with Hezbollah. Well, I think we all know by now what the word of a terrorist is worth...
