The American Roadster uses compressed natural gas, which is compressed at your home by the included compressor. It has a range of about 450 miles, so you cannot drive more than 225 miles from home, unless you know someone else with a natural gas compressor where you can refuel. Or you could install a second backup fuel tank?
With a top speed of 120 MPH the engine is much more powerful than needed. If a smaller engine were to be installed with maybe a top speed of 90 MPH the fuel range might jump up near 600 miles.
Much of the savings is because you pay little state or federal taxes on the natural gas.
