Who will win the automotive x prize (100 mpg)....??

Post by J-man »

You may have heard of the 'x prize' that was offered a few years ago. This prize was an award of $10 million, given to the first individual or non governmental organization which could put a space craft into space.

Now I notice that an 'automotive x prize' is being offered. The challenge to all forthcomers in the arena of car production, is to design a car which can attain a fuel rating of '100 miles per gallon' (or more). There are numerous criteria which need to be made in addition to breaking the 100 mpg barrier. For example in order to claim the prize, a car maker needs to both make and sell 10000 of their cars.

On the following website, I found out about 31 cars which are vying for this prize.

Although I have yet to delve deeply into this issue, I have already begun discovering what some of these 31 cars will look like, and more importantly what it is so unique about their respective designs, to qualify them as candidates to win the 'automotive x prize'. I see this prize as having the potential to stimulate innovation within the field of automotive design that could lead to new and better cars. These will be cars that are significantly more fuel efficient and cheaper to run, than many of those currently on the market.

After you've taken some time to learn more about some of these 31 entrants, I would be interested in finding out which you believe is most likely to win the 'automotive x prize'....and why.

On this thread, could you please share 'your pick' for which car (if any) will win, as well as your reasons for your choice ?

Some of the questions I have so far about the entrants I've looked into at this point include :

- Does the entrant have access to sufficient capital resources in order to be able to finance their project ?

- Is the entrant's design 'marketable' as well as technically feasible ?

- Is the entrant's concept close to being brought to reality at this point, or is it still largely at the 'drawing board stage' ?

Looking forward to hearing about your views on this subject !! As well, I plan to start a poll on this board. This poll will be to find out which car is chosen by participants of 'Besslerwheel.com' as the one most likely to win the contest.
