There are many cylinder and spheres models so I an going to describe this one in the slow motion video.

Slow motion is achieved by placing the same frame in the video for, I think, three or four times. This is done by the software application. These extra frames allow time for the brain to comprehend what the eye is seeing. Otherwise the whole experiment is pretty much a blur and has to be broken down to frame by frame; to see what is happening.

This experiment has a total mass of 594 grams. And its initial arc speed is 1.2 m/sec. But it is the relative mass (between the cylinder and spheres) that is important and it will function at any speed. So it is convenient for sake of discussion to round up to 1 kilogram spheres and 3.5 kilogram cylinder mass. And we will have them moving 1 meter per second. It would function just the same if it were one metric ton spheres being thrown by a 3.5 metric ton cylinder.

So the initial configuration is 4.5 kilograms with and arc speed of 1 m/sec for 4.5 units of momentum; and 2.25 joules of energy.

When the spheres have all the motion the arc speed would have to be 4.5 m/sec to maintain linear Newtonian momentum.

When the spheres have all the motion (at the first stop of the cylinder) the arc speed would have to be 2.121 m/sec to maintain 2.25 joules of energy.

For momentum conservation (4.5 m/sec for the spheres) the first restart of the cylinder would give back all the motion to give 1 m/sec rotation (arc speed) of the whole system.

From a speed of 2.12 m/sec (for the spheres) the restarted cylinder could only be moving .47 m/sec; because only linear Newtonian momentum can be given from a small object (bullet, spheres) to a large object (block, cylinder).

From this point we return the motion to the spheres and then back to the total system.

Linear Newtonian momentum retains the 4.5 m/sec again for the spheres and then 4.5 units of momentum remain at the end. This is exactly what the video shows.

To conserve energy, the second time, the .47 m/sec cylinder and spheres (.4970 joules) could only give the spheres a speed of .9970 m/sec. And the final speed for the system would only be .22 m/sec for both the cylinder and spheres. This is .22/1 22% of the measured final speed.

In the actual experiment (video) that would mean that it would take 18 frames (.2215% * 1.2 = .266 m/sec: .020 m * 240/18 = .266 m/sec), at the end, to cross the black square instead of the 4 frames that it actually does take. It takes 4 frames to cross the black square; 20mm in 4 / 240 th second = 1.2 m/sec at the start; in the middle ; and at the end.

The actual mass is spheres 132 g (66 g each) cylinder 462 grams.

The camera takes 240 frames per second.

Oh; sorry, slow motion is also caused by a 60 frame per second delivery instead of 240 frames per second. And each frame is presented three times; that gives you 20 frames per second when the real speed was 240 frames per second. So what you are seeing is moving at about 1/12 th speed.

But all measurement were taken in the frame by frame mode. If you take measurements from the slow motion mode you have to remember that there are extra frames in the mode. And if you reference real speed you have to remember that that speed would be in 1/240 th seconds per frames.

Almost ten years ago I was the very first person to post in this thread I somehow feel sorry for pequaide and am wondering if he is at least still with the living as people started to drop left and right in this community as age is the only non perpetual thing in nature it seems.

And still not a single erg of energy produced above & beyond that put in.
Maybe this thread should be a sticky....to immediately warn any newcomer that they'll flog themselves to death here for trying just about every nonsense imaginable.
