Orffyre :- Orffyreus

Post by Fletcher »

Often I read things erroneously. By the time I've decided that I'm actually quite interested in what I'm reading I have already shortened / condensced or otherwise changed some of the words into easy-mind-speak. Case in point : reading Tolkens' LTOR triology when I was a kid. The charactors names & place names that I recognise from the book bare only a cursory resemblance to Peter Jacksons films.

So with Orffyre & Orffyreus. Is the pronounciation ... Or-ffyre & Or-ffyre-us (as in Or-fire & Or-fire-ous) or something completely different ?

For ages I read it as Or-frey-us & I'm trying to change that. Your renditions appreciated.

I do the same thing, even this: "Or-frey-us"
And since he was accused of trying too get people to confuse him with Orphreus (sp?), I assume it is pronounced like that. But I'm not sure, because if I look at the spelling and think about it, I come to the conclusion of "orf-ee-ree-us".

I think orffyre = or-fire-ee and orffyreus = or-fire-ee-us. Is it possible to discover how it was pronounced by Bessler?

To me it sounds like 'Or-fear-ee-us', or 'Or-free-us'.
Of course, it's much easier to just call him 'Bessler'....

I agree with Ovvyus' pronunciation :-

I did wonder at some point in the past, if there might be some clue as to how to pronounce the word but as far as I#m aware there isn't. As Jonathan said, people accused him (JB) of using the name Orpheus, so presumably it must sound something like that.

When I first came to join this discussion board, I tried to log in under the name "Orifice", (I shoulda tried Oryfus) but I guess it was censored.

Since then my sense of humour has matured.............slightly.

Hi Coylo,
No, I didn't censor it, you just never activated the account. You submitted a hotmail address... Have you checked your hotmail inbox lately?

Probably one of my old hotmail accounts. 2MB was crap, Yahoo mail has now gone to 100MB for free!

Ah well, nevermind.

I agree that the 2MB is not great, but I got a message not long ago from the hotmail staff saying that hotmail was upgrading to 250MB, for free.

Interesting yes, and ingenious, but please take his assumptions and conclusions with a very large chunk of salt. Much of his 'evidence' is apparent only to his own eyes.

In my poor german, I guess he could call himself as ''orf-feerre'' and
''orf-feerrois'', reading as in english.
