Any Buzzsaw Wheel Models for sale?

Post by dlbeeson »

I saw an excellent Buzzsaw Wheel model by Mickegg, which referenced this forum. It appears to be about 1 foot in diameter, and hopefully made of aluminum for light weight mailing.

Does ANYONE have a well made WHEELS of the Buzzsaw Wheel that is for sale, and small enough and light enough to mail in the U.S?

2 inner wheels, and 2 outer wheels are all that is needed.
The weights and supports I can handle.
It is the exact cutting of the gullets that is beyond my skill.

Are there links to sites that sell Buzzsaw Wheel models?

Thank you in advance for anyone who responds.

Good morning and welcome to the forum.

I only know of like three that have been built. Ralph and Preston built models that were 3 to 4 ft in diameter.

If you like the model Mickegg built maybe he could send you a copy of his drawings that you could take to a machine shop to have cut.

Good luck.

@justsomeone,
Thank you for your response, and the information about these models. Have looked at them. Beautiful workmanship. But way to large and heavy for reasonable shipping. So your advise about the drawings may make sense, so I will make my own drawings.
Thanks again.

You're very welcome. Cutting out the gullets may be easier than you think. Determine how wide you wish to cut them. Let's say 1/2 inch. On your outer wheel cut a 1/2 inch diameter hole, just inside the inner lip, at every 45 degrees. You could easily set up a jig on a drill press to help with this. On the inner wheel cut the same holes only at every 22.5 degrees. Once all the holes are drilled, place the inner wheel inside the outer wheel. Align the holes with the inner wheel advanced until you get the angle you like. Now just draw a line from the sides of each hole from the inner and outer wheels. Cut to your lines. Advance the inner wheel exactly 22.5 degrees and mark the last cuts. I hope this helps and I wasn't too confusing.

JSO,

Very good explanation of how to make the gullets. The full scale wheel weights have 1" nubbins, I used a 1-1/16" bit to give the weights a little clearance.

I then rounded the outer edge of both inner and outer gullets giving the weights a better opportunity to shift back and forth. This was done by following the tracing that Doc sent me.

What ever size wheel you wish to make, start with two square sheets of material. Temporarily attach them together.

First draw diagonal lines from corner to corner, Then measure edges to find center horizontal and vertically. You now have four or eight (depending upon how you view it) lines all intersecting at dead center.

With a center punch and hammer punch the center for your compass or beam trammel. Draw two circles, one to the edge of the material and the other to the size of the inner wheel.

With a jig saw remove the square corners making for a round disk. Center punch where the lay out lines cross the inner wheel diameter. Once again with compass or trammel divide the distance in half to obtain your 22.5 degree locations. draw straight edged lines from center to center.

With drill press or power hand drill, drill for all gullets, making sure that the bit is just inside or on your inner wheel line. draw straight lines from outer to inner holes. with the jig saw cut out the lined material making for elongated gullets. Remember the inner wheel only gets the 22.5 gullets, do not saw or drill the outer wheel!

Now it is time to drill, bore the center for your axle. Here again you need a center or inner and outer axle. I used threaded pipe and pipe flanges. The flanges were of cheap four bolt cast and had to be machined to get a true face on them. The inner axle must protrude far enough to get chain sprockets on both inner and outer.

Starting with any gullet use jig saw to remove inner wheel from outer, you now have the width of the saw kerf as clearance between inner and outer wheel.

Once wheels are parted, use a rasp or file to slightly round the gullet entrance.

The "Buzzsaw" is probably one of the easiest designs to build as it can be laid out in full before ever making chips!

If you have a Lowes home supply store where you live, you can buy pre cut round, 3/4" OSB table blanks in 2 foot and 4 foot diameters or cut your own from plywood.

The shafts and bearings are readily available in most areas and the supports can be readily made from 4x4s.

Sprockets of all sizes can be found online. Elliptical sprockets have been discussed here as a possible solution.

Were I you, I'd study everything that has been written on these forums first and decide for yourself if this is really worth pursuing.

In my opinion, nearly every possible configuration of weights and gears have been tried to no avail.

Weights always tend to stack up on the bottom with no way to get them back to the top.

This is one of the more interesting wheels to play with especially considering that it just may have been a runner at one time.

My conclusion was that when all was said and done, no configuration will surmount the reality that when there is no input of external energy there will be no energy present to turn this or any other wheel.

Just curious. Where is this evidence? Thanks.

I do not have permission to post the six .excel format pages recorded by Preston.

If I did, it would give you a "heads up" on the number of variations that have been tried.

If you are skilled as a mechanic or mechanical structural engineer, you should be aware of "Tolerance Stack"... The higher the gear ratio the more critical it becomes. If off just a hair, after a few turns, it starts to add up in a hurry.

Doc claimed that the inventor (Albert) went through many of hacksaw blades and files attempting to overcome this problem.

And yes, all my weights eventually ended up jamming at the bottom.

To my knowledge, Preston, mikegg and I were the only ones who attempted a build, Preston's and mine were full scale while mik's was scaled down.

We shared our findings and research openly between ourselves. Preston gets the kudos for the clerical work of keeping tabs on variations and the "Free Source" entry on Peswiki.

@JSO

I should start by retracting that statement or at least modifying it.

I'll start with the assumption that you haven't already exhausted all of the logical gearing configurations and weight combinations yourself.

That Doc, Preston, Ralph, myself and probably many others haven't considered the one thing that makes this collection of parts run.

I personally have expended more hours than I care to admit on brainstorming the wheel in your care and nothing has come of it except one possibility wherein the wheel is nearly fully loaded and the transfer takes place between 1:00 and 11:00.

I apologize, my statement was not well thought out.

The solution will no doubt come to you.

Great posts Curtis and Ralph.

The solution come to me? I don't know about that. Being the new owner of the Buzzsaw wheel don't necessarily put me above anyone else in solving the buzzsaw mystery! I only have one combination to try between the number of weights and gearing. It is a little out of the box thinking and would include whatever contraption was fastened to the four holes on the red wheel.

In my opinion there is much more to explore.

How is your wife Curtis?

A few years ago I traveled to Arizona and met with Doc. I made tracings of the wheel and constructed a model, you can see it on my album. Stacking is a problem with the weights and getting them to transfer smoothly was a major issue for me.

Sorry Dave!

I forgot about you and should have gave you credit in my above posts. My awareness of you visiting Doc and making the tracings completely slipped a memory clog.

Welcome to the forum Dlbeeson.

Are you sure you need to build/buy 2 x complete buzzsaws? Maybe you can arrange to test your theory with a simpler setup.

Doc admitted to me that he did not become aware of the four UN-threaded holes for quite some time even after he had cleaned it up and painted it.

I concluded that they may have been used as picking points to remove the cast wheel from its mold. As imaginative as I could get, I could not find any other reason for them.
