The Great War

Post by Furcurequs »

The U.S. Public Broadcasting System's television series American Experience has just done a three part, six hour documentary on America's role in World War I. I've not yet watched the programs, but if they are anything like their documentaries on Tesla and Edison and others I've seen recently, I expect them to be quite good.

So, for those who may be interested, here are the links from which they can be streamed online:

"The Great War: Part 1"

"The Great War: Part 2"

http://www.pbs.org/video/3000014524/

"The Great War: Part 3"

More information:

There is another 6 hour PBS series on youtube with the same name, but it appears to have been produced in 1996. I've not seen any youtube links for this one.

The Great War Pt. 1 was well worth the effort. I'm looking forward to Pts 2 and 3

PS: Enjoyed the first Tesla video, too. The second one about the missile required being a member of KQED, so I skipped it.

Hey Jim,

I watched the first part today, and I wasn't disappointed. So, I'm looking forward to the other two parts also.

I believe PBS typically allows streaming of their programs by most everyone for a short period of time, maybe a few weeks, just after the shows are broadcast. After that they seem to make the shows only available to members. I suspect they may want a donation to sign up, but I'm not sure.

Youtube has some copies of the program about the missile, however. Here's one of them. It is quite good.

You can find other copies if you need to using this Google search:

Membership requires money.

Thanks for the YouTube version of American Experience. I'm surprised I don't recall anything about the 1980 event with the Titan ll missile. It's the kind of thing I'd tend to remember.

The Great War pt. 3 is my favorite. I had no idea such strife followed the end of it. Then again, I'm easily looking back from 2017 to see the 1960s and hippies, rather than from 1917 to see the Civil War and slavery.

That account was absolutely terrifying. The amazing thing to me is that we have managed to avoid a hydrogen bomb accidental explosion for so long.
After all, we've had plenty of accidents in the nuclear power industry.

The BBC did a series of videos on the Great War. I found them rather boring compared to the series on the second world war. Trouble is WW1 was one big stalemate, unlike WW2. Also, I was alive during WW2 although rather too young to really follow all the twists and turns. A lot of the most interesting stuff like code breaking was kept completely secret till well after the war had ended.
